Smokefree Summer launches to protect children and families

Our new campaign, Smokefree Summer is launching this month across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside. This exciting campaign will see a series of family-friendly events and spaces go smokefree across the three areas to protect children.

The Smokefree Summer team will attend events to promote healthy smokefree community areas, talk to members of the public and clearly brand events to signify that it is a smokefree event. The events are part of a wider campaign that includes survey work with local people, PR and engagement with key stakeholders.

Smokefree Summer has been developed to help children and young people to understand that smoking isn’t a normal activity (less than one in five people smoke nationally) and to create spaces for everyone to take part in healthy, positive behaviour. If you work within these locations and want to get involved please contact TFF at info@tobaccofreefutures.org. We look forward to updating you on progress in the next eNews.

Chancellor decides not to proceed with tobacco tax levy in this week's Budget

It is disappointing that the Chancellor decided not to proceed with a levy on the tobacco industry in last week's budget. The Government has already held a public consultation on the levy which was supported by more than 120 national and local organisations. The levy would help cut smoking rates, improve productivity and reduce pressure on the NHS. Editor's note

Hi , welcome to your July eNews.

We have had an exciting month developing our new campaign resources and branding for our smokefree summer campaign. The campaign is taking shape, with a series of events across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside now confirmed as smokefree. I look forward to updating you on our progress over the coming summer months.

It was really disappointing that the Chancellor didn't proceed with the tobacco tax levy in the Budget last week. Every day in the North West 35 people die from smoking- related illnesses, whilst the tobacco industry generates global profits of over £95million every single day. The tobacco industry must begin to pay communities back and support tackling tobacco in our hardest hit communities.
