What's on?

Barossa 2012 Vintage

Still in the final weeks of vintage, Winemaker Andrew Seppelt of Murray Street Vineyards shares his thoughts...“2012 is an awesome recovery year and it’s up there with great vintages. In winemaker speak it was a year for good colour and flavour. It's also given us the chance to be a little more experimental. Our wives would agree that it’s been a fairly polite vintage time-wise with the arrival, fermentation and finish of whites with Shiraz to follow, Cabernet, Grenache, Mataro (you get the picture). Most of us have been home in time for dinner (nearly). My pick for 2012 – look out for Grenache - fragrant, bright, not overly alcoholic with excellent structure.”

What’s hot in the wine world right now? Cassaly our Sommelier is loving the newly released Seppeltsfield 2011 Eden Valley Riesling, the top trophy wine at the Barossa Wine Show from our good friend Fiona Donald. And if you’re wanting something delicious for those cooler nights, Cass recommends you cosy down with a bottle of Milhinch Wines very small batch fortified Cabernet (if you can get your hands on some!). And when you’re in the valley make sure you drop in to Taste Eden Valley collective in Angaston where you can taste wines from premium small producers of Eden Valley.

Hiramasa Kingfish and Spencer Gulf prawns with autumn vegetable fruits.

Executive Chef Mark McNamara shares his recipe which he will be serving up at one of our Tasting Australia events… No doubt many of you are wondering what to do with those abundant eggplants, zucchinis and tomatoes and still make an impressive dinner without much fuss? Here you go...Oh and by the way Kingfish is easy to source and the only farmed fish Mark likes to use. Spencer gulf prawns are harvested from the only certified sustainable wild prawn fishery in the world— yep right here on our shores! We'd pair it with Michael Hall’s Roussanne or a rich medium bodied viognier.

We keep banging on about supporting our local wine and food producers, but in the bountiful Barossa it's so easy. Our menus feature 85% local ingredients. We collect, filter and carbonate our own rain water, yep that’s right, not many food miles in that! We recycle paper, food waste (plenty of plump chooks in the staff's chicken coops) and make good use of all waste water (plenty of water-wise plants and native scrub do their bit around the property). Keeping our community top of mind is important to us, we employ over 45 local people and have created a staff community sponsorship fund which supports charitable regional programs like Make A Wish.

Proud supporters of Australian contemporary artworks, there is plenty to feast your eye on at The Louise. The most recent addition to The Louise environs (and with one of the best views in the valley) is the piece pictured by Trent Manning. Growing up with a family owned engineering workshop in the backyard and a keen interest in steel led Trent to complete a blacksmithing course - this piece demonstrating just that. You will find many other original glass artworks, paintings, sculptures and more dotted about Appellation and The Louise.
