                                       PM&R Education Today

The effects of COVID-19 on Education: A Surge rotation schedule, didactics delivered virtually, and residents spending much of their time self-studying from the comfort of their own home and Zoom. A word that now has a different meaning. Zoom happy hours are enabling us to all feel connected even while apart.

Recruitment will also be entirely virtual with The Coalition for Physician Accountability releasing recommendation for the Class of 2021. ERAS residency match timeline is pushed back – opening October 21 for programs to begin reviewing applications with Match Day remaining March 2021. The residency leadership team is devising a plan to optimize the virtual recruitment experience. Dr. Goodfriend is developing a project in conjunction with her involvement in the Association of Academic Physiatrist's PALS program centered around the virtual recruitment process.

“Education is not telling students what you know; it's about engaging students, so they realize what they need to know and inspiring them to go and learn it. If you simply tell someone a fact, you help them learn one thing. But if you inspire them to learn, they continue to do that long after your encounter has concluded.”

-  William Hueston, MD, Senior Associate Dean and Professor, Associate Provost for Education

Congratulations Drs. Andrea Cyr and Nick Donohue as recipients of the MCWAH Research and Quality Improvement Award. Each year 20 awards are given to MCWAH housestaff, and as a relatively small department, we are able to nominate two residents annually. To be eligible, the nominee must have presented their research at a conference or published their research as a peer-reviewed manuscript in the previous year. These awards are highly competitive, so cheers Andrea and Nick!

Also, special thanks to their research mentors, Drs. Ken Lee and Hong Wu, for their mentorship on these successful research projects. The titles of Andrea and Nick’s projects were, respectively:

"Prevalence of Lateral Epicondylitis in Manual Wheelchair-Users Participating in Adaptive Sports"

"Comparing pain relief and functional improvement between methylprednisolone and dexamethasone lumbosacral transforaminal epidural steroid injections: a self-controlled study."
