Where are we now?

As I'm sure you are all aware, the UK held its referendum on continued membership to the European Union.

Our last newsletter touched on where we were, 1 week after the referendum.

This newsletter explores, over 1 month on, if the UK position has changed and what is happening behind the scenes.

As ever, our job at the Europe Direct Information Centre is to do what our name suggests - provide information.

We will endeavour to continue providing non-biased information, and not subjective opinion.

Implications of leaving the EU for the UK’s role in the world

The Foreign Affairs Committee have launched an inquiry looking into the implications of leaving the EU for the UK’s role in the world.

This inquiry explores a wide range of issues relating to the implications of the vote to leave the EU for Britain’s global role, strategic orientation and alliances, including the type of relationship that the UK may pursue with the EU in future.

It will also explore the cost and resource implications of the decision for the FCO and Government.

The main topics on the report are:

  • Funding the FCO after Brexit
  • Changes to machinery of Government
  • Absence of contingency planning

How am I affected?

The facts on where we are now, in relation to the UK and the EU, are quite simple:

Nothing has changed

All your rights as an EU citizen remain in place, as do those of citizens from other EU countries visiting or living in the UK.

They will cease to exist once negotiations have completed or the full 2 year term has come, once Article 50 has been triggered.
