Editor's note

Imagine being detained and told you’ll be kicked out of the country. But not knowing when or if your appeal to stay will be successful. This life in limbo for people living at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre means some of them are now refusing food. Joanne Vincett, who befriends detainees at the centre, says that for many of these women, such acts of dissent are one of the only ways to make a plea for help.

When black British student Rufaro Chisango shared a video of racist chanting taking place outside her dorm, it was met with shock and outrage. But as Remi Joseph-Salisbury points out, black and minority ethnic students have been speaking up against the systemic racism at universities for years: this latest incident should come as no surprise.

The pyramids of Giza seem to be mysteriously aligned with precision to the main four points of the compass. Now a study has suggested that a simple method known as the “Indian circle” – which only requires a shadow casting stick and string to calculate an east-west direction – could have been used to construct them. However, Daniel Brown warns that it’s easy to make assumptions, arguing you need to include evidence from a range of different areas, such as mythology and anthropology, to understand the past.
