1. Best quote(s) I’ve seen this week:"First of all, just listen and learn." Apple Executive, Angela Ahrendts on what it takes to make change inside a successful business. (Art: we are well served to spend more time listening and less time talking.) Tennis star, Serena
Williams on a question about failure: “I don’t think you can succeed unless you fail. You have to fall down a lot. It builds strength in you and it builds a determination.” “Every industry has its own opportunity where you can dramatically simplify the experience. It will take outside-in thinking.” Aaron Levie, Cofounder and CEO Box. (Art: this issue is mission critical for survival and success for all of our firms in an era of change. See my reference to "Changing the View" in #4, especially the linked blog post.) 2. Best short article that made me think and act:"How to Get Out of that Funk," by leadership guru, Michael Hyatt. (Art: We all hit the wall from time-to-time. Michael is a force in the world of leadership and marketing and it's oddly reassuring to know that even the uber-experts need a little extra motivation now and then. It's even
more refreshing to follow his advice!) My own related blog post from the Leadership Caffeine series: 9 Ideas to Help You Refuel as a Leader 3. Slightly longer article that made me think and act:"How Small Shifts in Leadership Can Transform Your Team Dynamic." (Art: Frankly, this is a great and useful article emphasizing how simple adjustments in communication and role-modeling from leaders can improve morale and create a more productive environment. It's a fifteen minute read give or take with a few excellent case examples.) 4. One great thing you still have time for this week:Change Your View. I’m a constant nag on the need for all of us to better understand the view from functions other than our own. Spend too much time observing the world from your department’s windows, and you start to develop functional tunnel vision. Reach out to a peer in another group and ask to be invited to a team update or, invite him/her to one of yours. Do this regularly and strive to learn more about the view others have on market or organizational issues. Better yet, find common areas to collaborate on for improvements. Related post that extends the "change" beyond your firm's walls from my Art of Managing Series: "8 Ideas to Expand Your Field of View" 5. One thing your team wishes you would do this week (or sometime soon): Bring them up to speed on your firm's strategy,
key goals and how they fit in the big picture. People and teams do their best work when they have context for how their work supports the larger cause. Score some points by inviting your boss to help field questions. Remember to ask for ideas on execution issues. You might be pleasantly surprised how many great ideas your team members are holding on to for the right moment. Make it the right moment! -- NEW PROGRAM: Join Art on Monthly Leadership Group Coaching CallsFor a limited time and limited enrollment, I’m extending the opportunity to join me on a monthly one-hour small group coaching call where I will share leadership insights and approaches and offer coaching guidance.
