Message from the Principal

Open Day
There are many different ways to measure success and last Saturday at Open Day the College looked magnificent.  Our Student Ambassadors did a tremendous job meeting and greeting, answering many questions and conducting tours for our prospective families who came to see our school in action.  We also welcomed the Senator the Honourable Mitch Fifield who officially opened our newly renovated Sports Centre as part of our 125 years celebrations. Thank you also to our parent volunteers who helped out on the day.

Graduate Art Show
Attending the opening of the Graduate Art Show on Wednesday evening was a privilege. The diversity and quality of student work was remarkable. Thank you to our wonderful Explorations staff for making it such a delightful occasion.

International Women’s Day Dinner
Last night we held our very successful 4th International Women’s Day Dinner which was attended by approximately 150 people.  Our guest speakers, Dr Anne Walker AM, Christine Faulks (SOSK) and Kathy Kaplan (impact for women inc) spoke about the challenges for a lot of women.  Thank you to Alana Hollenberg, Kate Castle and their team for a great event.

Inter School Social Justice Conference

It’s always a glorious feeling when you’re told you're going to miss a day of school. When the teacher says that the program will ‘run for an entire day’ you just can’t help but smile, knowing that you can just sit back and relax, and pretty much just skip an entire day of formal lessons!

News from the Junior School

The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to do more than other curricula by developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.  We hope our students will help to build a better world through intercultural understanding and respect.

So where does learning another language fit in? Why should children who are already learning one language, as well as the language of Mathematics and the language of music, spend more time learning a foreign language?

Middle School Captains are Persuaded to visit Year 5

The Year 5 class are currently learning about role models for their first unit of inquiry and what better role models to visit their class than Maddie and Alex.

Students from Year 5 questioned Maddie and Alex about being a leader and role model at Kingswood College. Each child then presented their persuasive text to Maddie and Alex.   They received excellent positive feedback about how persuasive and emotive they were, how persuasive language was used and the dramatic way it was presented. According to all parties involved it was ‘a very happy, positive experience’.

A celebration of Chinese New Year is not complete without a Lion Dance!

As Kingswood College offers Chinese language and Chinese culture courses, we celebrate the important Chinese festivals with our students.

This year some students made dumplings and some students got very special red pockets. The lion was the highlight and caused much excitement as it made its way from Station Street.  The lion’s movements have their origin in Chinese martial arts. Lions might visit the houses and shops of the Chinese community to grab at green vegetables which they then spit out but the red envelop with money will be kept. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to a business.

The lion danced along the school driveway starting from the main office and finishing at the Junior School courtyard. Our students and staff enjoyed it thoroughly especially the younger students.  The squeals of delight were tremendous as the lion drew up to its full height. Some of the Early Learning Centre students declared that they knew it was not a real lion!  Others of them have already asked when the next Chinese New Year will occur.

We want to thank Tatsing Chinese grocery shop at the corner of Canterbury Road and Station street  for donating $300 towards the cost of the lion dance and some chocolate for our Chinese Culture class. We hope that Tatsing’s generous sponsorship  brings them prosperity in the New Year.

Thank you to everyone who bought their tickets early.  The night was a sell out once again.  Everyone agreed it was a fabulous night and a full report will be in our next newsletter.  Thank you to the wonderful members of the IWD Dinner Committee, led by this year’s Chairperson Kate Castle, who have worked tirelessly for the past month or two to make the Dinner happen.  We know that SOSK are extremely appreciative of the support and the money raised.
