Season's Greetings! | Music at Breakwater | Showcase Week | Breakwater Fund | Financial Aid | Enrichment | Curiosity Lab's Lending Library | Save the Date SEASON'S GREETINGS FROM DAVID SULLIVAN Dear parents, families and friends: This holiday season I am especially appreciative of the importance of the work we do at Breakwater. Our school has been actively educating curious, respectful and kind minds since 1956, preparing children to go “beyond the Breakwater” as engaged citizens. Experiences that inspire empathy, compassion and self agency are woven into our toddler through 8th grade curriculum. Intellectual and academic investigations incorporate deep learning about how each one of us can make a difference in our school, community and the world at large. Everyday I am impressed by our students’ energy, exuberance and extraordinary enthusiasm for life. I am heartened to imagine a world run by these young individuals - a future shaped by their strong hands will be bright. Whether you are new to our school or are a returning family with us for years, I want to thank you personally for being a part of our community. Your involvement in our school makes us who we are, and is an essential asset to the health and vibrancy of our learning environment. On behalf of all the faculty and staff - may our New Year together be filled with love, peace and lots of fun. Oh, and maybe we learn a new thing or two! Sincerely, David
ABOUT MUSIC AT BREAKWATER Music at Breakwater offers students a developmentally sound, carefully sequenced curriculum in music literacy, with a focus on singing and creativity. Music teacher Hans Indigo Spencer combines his training in Kodàly pedagogy, his background as a jazz musician and media composer with his work as a K-8 general classroom teacher to provide students with a wide range of creative musical outlets. SHOWCASE DAYS: What do food systems, buoyancy, inventors, rivers, biomes and tape dispensers all have in common? Showcase Days! December 13-15 students, families and extended community visit classrooms for a glimpse of the magic behind the doors. Students share with the community both the process and product of their learning in interactive, curated “Showcases”. THE BREAKWATER FUND: Have you made your charitable donations for the 2017 tax year? Contributions to the Breakwater Fund made before 12/31 are fully deductible. Make a gift today! Your donation directly affects students, faculty and numerous programatic and curricular elements that make us who we are. SUPPORTING COMMUNITY We strongly believe enrolling a diverse and talented group of children and their families benefits all in our school community. Toward this goal, we provide need-based financial assistance to qualified K through 8 families. Financial Aid applications for returning families are due by February 9. ENRICHMENT SESSION THREE: Registration for Session Three is now open. Not sure what class to take? Join us for a week of complimentary "open house" classes January 2-6. Contact Kelly for a selection of available classes and drop in information. Registration for the January 12 PD Day and February Vacation Camp is also open, and please don't forget to re-register for Aftercare and The Landing! WHERE CURIOSITY LEADS, The large shelving unit to the left of the Curiosity Lab's main entrance is now filled with books, games, and other Lab resources. This is our brand new Lending Library, and it is here for you! Families can borrow materials to support explorations outside of school.
