Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Tuesday 13 October. Some highlights of our meeting included approving a peace rock with a plaque and poem at Harrington Park, in response to requests from our community. We also approved no stopping restrictions on a part of The Runway in Wigram, to improve safety in this area. Our Board received the Waipuna/Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Area Report for October, which provides us with an overview of the great work being done within our area. Peace rock for Harrington ParkA symbol of peace, love and unity will be installed in Riccarton's Harrington Park. A poem by Sirwan Mohamadi along with an artwork by Ruby Jones will be placed on a plaque on the peace rock, which the Oak Development Trust plan to install this summer. Our Riccarton, Our Community Let’s Have Fun DayThis Year’s Our Riccarton, Our Community Let’s Have Fun Day will be held on Saturday 24 October 2020 from 1 to 4pm. The community-organised event is full of activities, food and entertainment. This year with COVID-19 in mind, the organisers have planned events at four different locations in the Riccarton area, each of them accessible by foot, bike and or scooter. Come along and enjoy a pony party, café and henna painting at Harrington Park, a dunking machine and things magical at Paeroa Reserve, Cheapskates and quizzes at Best Start Early Learning Centre in Wainui Street along with ethnic food and entertainment at 80 Rattray. Full details of what is where will be placed onto the Riccarton.org.nz community hub page. It’s a great opportunity to explore this area of Riccarton. Concept design locked in for new Hornby CentreChristchurch City Council has approved the concept designs for the new Hornby Centre planned to be built on the east side of Kyle Park. The Council is investing $35.7 million into the multi-use centre to meet the community and recreational needs of the growing population living in the south-west of Christchurch. Enjoy open days, walking tours, workshops, talks, exhibitions and cultural performances are some of what’s on the programme until the festival wraps up on Sunday 8 November. Christchurch urged to start saving water nowChristchurch residents are being urged to start watching their water use as demand on the city’s water supply network ramps up early. The seasonal outlook from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) indicates the current warm and dry trend is likely to continue until at least the end of the year. if we all do our bit to water wisely, our city might be able to get through the summer without the need for water restrictions.
