While the sentiments behind Australia’s new social media law penalising platforms for violent content, are to be applauded, the law itself may prove problematic. The legislation criminalises ‘abhorrent violent material’ but lacks a clear definition of the ‘expeditious’ timeframes in which companies will be required to remove content, and its speedy passing has concerned many. Labor has already promised to review it if it’s elected in May (along with revisiting the encryption bill). But Australia is just one small part of the social media map, and for real change world powers need to align around similar changes. So is it time for some G20 teeth to be applied to social media?
