Cante Waste ya Nape Ciyu zape ye (I greet you from my heart). It’s been quite the year of delving deeper into the work of healing and action. Much of my travel has focused on training, developing collaborative work, sharing best practices and recommending partnerships. Other important work includes assisting those with theological training development, as well as making connections with tribal leaders and dioceses for advocacy and community development partnerships.

FIRST NATIONS KITCHEN OF ALL SAINTS INDIAN MISSION

Eight years ago, when the circle of people who had interviewed me for the clergy position at All Saints Indian Mission in south Minneapolis shared their vision and hopes for their church, one goal particularly piqued my interest: the offering of a feeding program. The members wanted to restart a “soup kitchen,” a program which they started but had had a difficult time maintaining consistently.

YOUNG ADULT INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY

What’s in a name? We’ve been working on this for some time (drumroll please!) but are very excited to share our name!  Listening is an important part of our life here, and we wanted to take time to get to know our neighbors and form our vision first. Wopila (Woah-Pee-Lah) means “thank you” but a special kind.  Our elders here explain it means “thank you from the heart,” a deeper sort of thanks for a gift that touches one deeply.  It can also be used to offer one’s deepest thanks to God.

REPORT FROM THE COMMITTEE ON INDIGENOUS MINISTRIES

Executive Council’s Committee on Indigenous Ministries (ECCIM) met in Salt Lake City at the Diocesan Center on August 19-21. They had a majority of their members present and engaged themselves in the work of making a Blue Book Report, creating resolutions for the General Convention and for the Executive Council’s consideration.

THE PEOPLE OF GOD IN PARAMOS GO ON PILGRIMAGE

Chimborazo Ecuador is a small community in the south, where 15 million people live in America, 3 million of which are indigenous from 12 ethnic groups, each with its own language, traditions, customs, spirituality, and culture. We have our common values such as respect for the family, community, and love for the earth, solidarity and experience of the God of Life. However, like other people of the earth we have adverse situations that come before the culture of life such as the rupture of the organization, the tendency to certain acculturation, loss of confidence in ourselves, the loss of credibility of the leaders, a certain attitude of dependency, poverty and racism.
