Click here National Diabetes Week 2021During National Diabetes Week, we take a look at the work our Children's Diabetes Centre researchers are doing to improve the quality of life of young people living with diabetes and their families. This includes the ground-breaking ENDIA research led by the CDC's Dr Aveni Haynes. The study aims to identify the cause of type 1 diabetes in children with the hope to begin intervention to delay or prevent diabetes. New clinic to revolutionise diabetic eye treatmentA new eye clinic to treat children and adolescents will help to reduce blindness in WA children with diabetes. The eye clinic, based at the Lions Eye Institute in Nedlands, will screen, assess and treat children referred from Perth Children's Hospital's Endocrinology and Diabetes, and Opthalmology departments for juvenile diabetic retinopathy complications. Three questions with Dr Vinutha ShettyFor National Diabetes Week, we sat down with Dr Vinutha Shetty, Research Exercise lead at the Children's Diabetes Centre, an endocrinology consultant at PCH and a clinical lecturer with UWA, to talk about her amazing work in research. Dr Shetty has been instrumental in developing the world's first T1D Exercise Advice App acT1ve for teens and young adults. Mobile Food Record StudyMonitoring food intake is important for people living with type 1 diabetes. That's why our researchers want to make the process easier. We are looking for people (9-18 years) with T1D to trial a Mobile Food Record App to take photos of what they eat and drink which can be automatically uploaded and viewed by a dietitian. Food Frequency QuestionnaireWant to know your child's dietary intake in more detail? Our researchers are running a study to look at your child’s average daily dietary intake of protein, fat and carbohydrates and compare this to the current Australian dietary guidelines. We would like children (2-18 years) diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Research Participation StudyWe acknowledge that there are many reasons as to why people choose whether or not to participate in clinical research and we would like to explore if these are the same for those who are living with type 1 diabetes in WA. Sports Coaching StudyOur researchers are developing resources to upskill coaches on type 1 diabetes so they can better support players. We are looking for young people (8-21 years) with type 1 diabetes or their parents, and sports coaches to help us develop the resources. Exercise StudyOur researchers need your help (if you are 14-35 years) to assess whether a home-based program of either low-intensity or intermittent high-intensity exercise can improve a person's ability to feel hypo symptoms.
Countdown to campIt’s July already and camp is just around the corner, in September. If you have recently moved or updated your phone number, please let us know your new details so we can send you an invite to camp (for the 9 and 10 year-olds) and keep you up to date with clinic information. Diabetes clinic triage systemA reminder that the triage system for Perth Children’s Hospital’s diabetes clinic has been updated. After a review, a true triage system based on priority has been implemented. Consistency and continuity of care are also key to the new system. Friendly new facesThere’s been a few changes in clinic lately and you may have noticed some friendly new faces as your educators. Please welcome our new team members, they look forward to seeing you at your next visit. New Telethon Kids Discovery Schools Program Diabetes researchers from the Children's Diabetes Centre have enjoyed hosting primary school students recently as part of the Telethon Kids Institute's Discovery Centre School's Program. During the visits, students did a practical exercise testing the different sugar concentrations in drinks and spoke about how this would impact insulin requirements. If you know of any schools who are interested in taking their students to a world-class research institute, get them to sign up to our Discovery Centre + Schools e-newsletter so they can be the first to know once bookings are open for Term 4. |
