LAW SCHOOL NEWSDear all, This coming week will see many of you go to Streatham for the Law Careers Fair. Make sure that you fully research your chosen law firms beforehand and that you take a notepad to write down any useful information that you gain from talking to law firms. Check out these top tips for further useful advice. You can also see the full list of exhibitors here. This coming week will see you complete your first formative assessment for Criminal Law. This will take place in your seminar where you will both write and hand-in your essay. Good luck! Best wishes, The Law & Business Programmes Team Law Lab Law Lab will be taken by Daiman D. Baker on Monday 18th November. Daiman is from LA and is a member of the California State Bar. In the late 1990s and early 2000s he worked in the entertainment industry and internet startups. Since living in the UK from 2003, he’s been working in investment banks in London implementing new legislation. In 2012, he started splitting his time between London and Cornwall. Daiman loves his two young kids, surfing (badly), music and has a budding interest in transformational coaching. On Monday we will be discussing unconscious bias both in the legal profession and society in general, identifying where it may exist and suggesting potential remedies. “Why should I care about unconscious bias? I’m aware. I have a diverse set of friends and colleagues.” If you are a woman in law and hoping to secure employment and progress in your career, bear this in mind: according to a 2018 survey conducted by The Law Society “Unconscious bias in the legal profession is the most commonly identified barrier to career progression for women…”. The use of algorithms in criminal justice If you have an interest in criminal law, then unconscious bias in the use of algorithms is well-documented. “The Law Society Technology and Law Policy Commission publishe[d] its report [in June 2019] on algorithms in criminal justice alongside an interactive map that allows the public to see for the first time the beginnings of an overview of where algorithms are being used to assist decision-making across the justice system across England and Wales…”. There is benefit in being aware of UB If you can get a handle on your own unconscious biases it may: · Save you or a client from a discrimination claim; and · Open up opportunities, i.e., you could personally benefit (we will review a few relevant stories) So let’s talk about where UB may exist and remedies to it.
