When you belong to such an extensive alumnae network, there's a lingering question of how to best go about staying in touch. Often the search for interesting connections and long-lost friends itself becomes a way of connecting more deeply with the community. In this edition of the 1898, we explore a number of alumnae who are thinking about the search for connections in unique and fascinating ways.

CHS Alumnae Welcome a New President

At this year’s Alumnae Association AGM, CHS alumnae thanked Christine (Wong) Applegarth ‘92 for the fantastic work she’s done as president of the executive over the past two years and welcomed Cathy (Fraser) Hunt ‘81 into the role. Cathy speaks with great enthusiasm as she ponders the historical crossroads at which the association finds itself.

Annual NYC Alumnae Event

For the past several years Crofton House alumnae living in New York have gathered together for a lunch where they share stories, network, and chat about the ways their lives have changed since leaving Canada. This year’s gathering was also graced with a special group of visitors: twenty current CHS students who were visiting New York for a whirlwind exploration of the city's fine arts.

Class Notes

Shirley (McLeod) Giroday '48 graduated UBC in 1951 (BA) and 1955 (LLB). She articled in 1955-56 and was called to bar in 1956, marrying Michael Giroday (LLB, UBC) in 1958. She practiced in partnership with her husband (and others) in Dawson Creek 1958-68 and Powell River 1968-84, and was appointed judge in 1984. Shirley was the first female lawyer in Northern BC and among the first in BC. She has six children, three of whom became lawyers: Lesley – a partner with Ratcliff &​ Co. in North Vancouver; Ian – a partner with Hobbs Giroday in Vancouver; and Patrick – with Heath &​ Company in Nanaimo.

"Apollinaire, The Little Auto," a translation by Beverly (Bie) Brahic '61, was awarded the 2013 Scott Moncrieff Prize for Translation in a ceremony at Europe House in London in February of this year. For more, read the Times Literary Supplement story.

Jane Hungerford '62 is being awarded Order of BC.

Daegan Fryklind '87 is currently the Showrunner (writing Executive Producer) on the werewolf series Bitten, which just finished airing on Space in Canada, Syfy in the US, and HBONordic in Scandinavia, and is gearing up for Season 2. She's also writing for Motive, which airs on CTV/ABC.

The second book from Alexandra Oliver '88, Meeting the Tormentors in Safeway, which was named as a Canadian Poetry Book of the Year for 2013 by The National Post, has just been shortlisted for the Pat Lowther Award.

Reunion
