Shanesville Celebrates 200 Years this Saturday

On Saturday, August 9, Shanesville, which is just outside of Holmes County in Sugarcreek, will celebrate 200 years since it was founded at the intersection of two Native American trails by Abraham Shane. The event will feature historical activities, such as a cemetery walk, ceremonial proceedings and several musical performances by bands, including the Stockdale Brothers and the Shanesville Polka Band.

 

In keeping with Shanesville tradition, there will also be a Beard Contest to recognize the art of facial hair.

Enjoy Wine, Cheese and Chocolate in Amish Country

Call it the trifecta of taste bud tantalization—wine, cheese and chocolate—and a dedicated tour for these three delicacies exists in and around Ohio’s Amish Country. Ohio’s Heartland Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Trail is a six-county partnership that runs through Holmes County. The other counties included are Stark, Carroll, Coshocton, Tuscarawas and Wayne.

 

The trail includes nineteen different wineries, five cheesemakers, six chocolatiers, and nineteen retailers that provide guests with multiple culinary experiences.

These businesses make the most of Holmes County’s rich, home-style foods and cheeses that start from locally produced milk. The trail provides guests with an authentic Amish cultural experience in Holmes County.

New Visitors' Center Opens in Berlin

The Holmes County Tourism Bureau is ready to guide you in the right direction the next time you are in Berlin. The new Visitors’ Center—located on Main Street next to Boyd and Wurthmann restaurant—is now open and staffed by local experts from the region who can help plan your visit.

 

Visitors can also pick up maps of the region and brochures for all the top destinations in Amish Country. The new Visitors’ Center is open Thursdays-Saturdays, 10 am-6 pm.

 

The Holmes County Tourism Bureau’s main office in Millersburg also has a wealth of information and knowledgeable staff who can help with directions and advice on every must-see attraction!

Take the Remodeling Party Outside

With seasonal temperatures beautiful outdoor colors, the end of summer and fall are ideal times to think about adding an outdoor structure to your backyard. Look to Amish Country for some of the finest builders of gazebos, pergolas and storage barns.

 

When a darling little playhouse or garden shed will do the trick, Berlin’s Little Cottage Co. has many options. The company offers prebuilt structures or DIY kits, so you can be as hands-on as you like. The Little Cottage Co. is located at 4070 State Route 39.

 

If you love entertaining guests, Berlin Gardens offers stylized gazebos, pergolas and pavilions. The structures are constructed in wood or vinyl, and they company’s website has easy-to-follow instructions designing your own. Berlin Gardens is at 5029 Township Highway 359.

 

JDM Structures is outside of Berlin and offer functional and well-designed storage barns and garages, from small to large. JDM’s construction quality reflects the Amish heritage of building expertise. JDM is located at 5840 County Road 201.

 

Kauffman Lawn Furniture in Berlin has just about everything in outdoor structures, from chicken coops and dog houses to decorative lighthouses and log cabins. Baby Giraffe Born at The Farm

On August 1, The Farm at Walnut Creek celebrated the birth of a healthy male baby giraffe. The new giraffe has yet to be named. At birth, the giraffe weighed 160 pounds and was six feet tall.

 

This is the sixth giraffe now residing at The Farm at Walnut Creek. Both mother and baby are both getting some privacy and recuperation time before visitors will be able to meet them.

August: Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables

Produce in season at many local produce stands and markets this month:

Fruits: Apples, blueberries, peaches, raspberries

 

Vegetables: Beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, kale, onions, peppers

 

Herbs: Dill, parsley


Tip: Beets should be firm, round and have a slender top root. Avoid elongated beets with round, scaly areas around the top. These are signs of undesirable texture and flavor.

"Half-Stitched, the Musical" Makes a Second Run

Award-Winning novelist Wanda Brusetter’s love story "Half-Stitched" is coming back to the Amish Country, from August 22 through December 20.

 

"Half-Stitched, the Musical" is about a group of beginning quilters making better strides in their lives and coming closer to God.
