The Australian Curriculum has a strong emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority. The Australian Curriculum works to address two needs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education: that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can see themselves in the curriculum; and that all students can engage in reconciliation, respect and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. ESA has worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and groups to create educational resources and professional learning, including the resources below. Suggested resourcesCase studies
Early Childhood Resource Hub (ECRH)The ECRH is home to three self-paced, free professional learning modules to help you become more confident in planning a learning program that incorporates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and that actively welcomes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. The modules available are: 'Personal cultural competencies'; 'Embedding culture in teaching practice'; and 'Building a culturally competent and responsive service'. They can be completed individually or as a team, and are designed for educators working in early years settings. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary students: Illustrations of good practiceThe 'Illustrations of good practice' series includes six videos and nine written case studies showcasing VET, vocational learning and career education programs that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary students transitioning to post-school destinations. The case studies reflect the five themes that CIRCA’s National priorities report identified as consistently underpinning the successful delivery of vocational learning and VET to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people: context, flexibility, two-way learning and community engagement, real-world job pathways, and aspiration, self-esteem and belonging. The 'Illustrations of good practice' series is available to view and download on the myskills website. Student Wellbeing HubWe know teachers are always on the lookout for high quality, evidence-informed professional learning that builds their knowledge of contemporary issues facing schools today as well as offering practical classroom support in the form of videos, case studies, tips and strategies.
