Ot(her): A Solo Show by Jes Fan

Opening Reception:
Thursday, December 10, 6-8PM
Sarah Doyle Gallery

Artist Statement from Jes Fan:

I navigate the world between categories and as such my work exists in the pliable space of in between-ness. Born in Canada, raised in Hong Kong and recently based in New York, I am aware that I belong to everywhere yet nowhere. Female by birth, but masculine presenting, I constantly exist in gender binaries as an other. Responding to my experiences of being in the limbo, my work is an exploration of objects that defies systems of classifications.

This show is an inquiry into other-ness, and in particular the aspects of how marginal identities are often assimilated through the rhetoric of the exotic and/or the erotic. I rely on appropriating objects categorized as ethnic or feminine; to question the structures that classified them as such. In morphing the manufactured purpose of these objects, my work proposes a utopic ideal, in which objects are capable of objecting the status quo.

How to Unmake an American Quilt

The Sarah Doyle Gallery's February exhibition will be "How to Unmake an American Quilt," by Amber Ginsburg & Katie Hargrave.

The act of undoing as an ethical choice.

In a goal-oriented world, can we open a space for creative political dialog by removing progress, by acting in reverse? How to un-make an American Quilt acts as a pair of scissors re-imagined toward uncertain outcomes.

We question ideas of labor, gender roles and historical nostalgia by skilling without an emphasis on result. Rather, this is skilling for the sake of skill with an eye to collectivity and conversation. As a questioning, we work toward building a collective understanding of communal labor and we see the work as an opportunity, through deconstruction, to contemplate alternatives to material use, gender roles and labor activities.

With your help, Ginsburg and Hargrave set the stage in the Sarah Doyle Gallery to deconstruct an intricate hand-made quilt. Participants will be engaged in conversation and catharsis as the group meticulously removes stitch after stitch. The project will pursue an intimate understanding of one particular skill, looking to the scraps of material as an opening to raw potential.
