ILF UPDATE Finance The ILF funds its activities and grants through an investment portfolio which consists primarily of Australian equities. The portfolio is structured to withstand downturns such as the one we are in right now. The allocation to cash is 6% to 10% and this cash together with dividends will fund the activities of the ILF for at least two years without curtailment and without selling any equities. Membership of the ILF The Board reviewed its strategy on 20 February and decided to
consider options to expand membership of the ILF. Currently there are 29 members all of whom have been office bearers of the Ai Group South Australia Branch Advisory Council or its predecessor organisations. The Board has decided to recommend to the next General Meeting that Office Bearers of the ILF Scholars Committee (Chairman or Treasurer) become entitled to apply for membership of the ILF. Implementation will occur in November after at the next AGM if it is approved. Applicants needed The ILF has funding capacity to allow grants to be made this year. Many potential applicants are focused on managing the current business pressures and surviving the downturn rather than considering the long term future of their businesses. With this lack of focus on the long term it is
possible that the number of grants this year will be limited by lack of applicants rather than the budget. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO SHOULD APPLY FOR A GRANT, THIS YEAR COULD BE THE BEST YEAR TO RECOMMEND THEY APPLY.

Background Steven's background is primarily as an engineer and production manager in the food industry both in the UK and Australia. He started his career in the UK managing small shift-based production teams in sugar factories before moving through the organisation to become more involved in long-term strategic development of the company’s animal feed production facilities. After moving to Adelaide with his family in 2001 (a decision he looks back on with some incredulity but acknowledging it was the best thing he could have done), he gained his first role as the Bakery Manager of the iconic company Balfours with particular responsibility of managing the team that moved the production facility out of Adelaide
CBD. Having realised that the elements of work he most enjoyed were working closely with small teams, learning new things and getting involved in the more strategic elements of developing and running a business, he looked to explore the wide range of small business that is predominant in South Australia. After periods as General Manager of an egg production company and then a small IT company, in 2014 he secured a role as the first non-family member to manage Kay Brothers, an historic wine maker in McLaren Vale. Kay Brothers Kay Brothers was started by two young brothers, Herbert and Frederick Kay, with the assistance of their sisters, Rose and Kate, in 1891. The family had an entrepreneurial spirit with their mother and
father moving to Adelaide in 1850 and becoming successful in the new colony and family money helped Bert and Fred acquire the Amery Estate in McLaren Vale in 1890.
