TSG PAR 3 CHAMPIONSHIP 2021: Pedham Place Academy Course From the moment the TSGers arrived, there was a lovely, relaxed atmosphere in the clubhouse. An overcast morning provided an ideal, cool temperature for golf. That was followed by a lovely, glorious sunny afternoon and, of course, a dramatic and nail-biting finish - as always! The shoot-out on the 18th green once again added drama (and pressure) to the day, with the winner emerging victorious after two play-off holes. Commiserations to Mr. Paul Houghton who couldn't have fought any harder for the prize. However, we congratulate Mr. Paul Thorne.....our NEW, TSG Par 3 Champion! Here's what he had to say on his first TSG Major victory... "Thank you to Ian and the TSG team for organising an excellent event at Pedham Place today. A wonderful bunch of people. A special thank you to my fourball team, consisting of the two Martins and Gary, for all your encouragement on the way around the 27 holes. Thank you to Paul Houghton on a well-fought final!" Here is the full list of winners from yesterday... A 'Trevor' (Chip-in-Birdie ) - Val Hammond (from 70 yards) Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to Mark Crane, whose continued commitment to this day is faultless. He helps put out flags, check handicap entries, prepares the quiz questions, and sticks around after to help pack up. His contribution to TSG is priceless...Thank you Mark! See you at the TSG OPEN on 1st August! It is an easy journey for a London golfer to make and is an ideal location for a corporate golf day out. The M25 and M11 motorways provide easy access to Essex, as do the two mainline rail networks from Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street. There are more than 70 golf clubs in Essex and whilst the last few years have seen a number of closures, it is still one of the biggest golfing counties in the UK. Whilst most of the county is based on clay, there are some courses that have good drainage and some with exceptional views. Some of the better-known clubs for golf societies in Essex to consider include:Thorndon Park Golf Club’s course was created in 1920 on a deer park dating back to the 1580s. The deer park, already rich with oaks from the 16th century – some of which survive to this day – was enhanced with oaks and chestnuts planted in the 1730s by the eighth Lord Petre, a noted botanist. The Hall in the image above was designed by James Paine and completed in 1770. It was here that George III was entertained in 1778 and later, Lancelot “Capability” Brown laid out a park that was the finest in the county. Ravaged by fire in 1878, Thorndon Hall was offered a new lease of life in 1919 when a group of businessmen saw the grounds as the perfect place for a golf course and for developing a residential estate, similar to the one planned for St George’s Hill at Weybridge. St George’s Hill had chosen Harry Colt as its architect – and he was selected to design Thorndon Park golf course. With the onset of the Second World War and the subsequent constraints of the Green Belt laws, the plans for an estate never materialised. But the course did. It was opened on 1st July 1920 and it has thrived ever since. Over a period of time, the Club bought the 240 acres the course occupied and, in 1968, Thorndon Hall. With the building of a new clubhouse in 1974, the Hall was sold the next year to a building company, which restored the facade of the Palladian mansion to its former glory and turned the building into apartments with views over the course. Course Review of the Month: Mill Ride GC, Ascot, Berkshire, UK "Best course in the area..." Having joined this club last week, I am over the moon with my decision! The course suffered in the wet but as much that can be done, to be fair, has been done to make improvements e.g. drainage added on numerous holes. The greens here are lightning quick, but also true and the fairways awesome. And most of the bunkers are immaculate as well. Holes 2, 3, 8, 10, 11, and 17 are the stand out for me...plenty of water, trees, and bunkers, and long fairways...but luckily the Stroke Index allows for this. I can't believe some haven't rated the practice facilities 5/5? Mill Ride GC has a full-length range, chipping and bunker area with a short game approach area and putting green...what's missing?! A brand new halfway hut offers a break and nice food before the brutal back 9. Food and drink is nice, staff friendly, members welcoming... investment in the inside of the clubhouse expected too. Give it a try! Gary Harvey - Berkshire (H'cap 11)
