FOR THE RECORD: THREE LOCAL CD REVIEWS
You might ask why I’m writing about this record now, and not a few months back when it officially surfaced. That’s a fair question, and I suppose the answer is that only recently have I felt the need to; only recently have I reached the conclusion that simply not enough has been said about this rather remarkable release. Of the reviews it has had, too few have been willing to engage it thoroughly as a collection of songs, instead berating the album’s stylistic volatility. I can’t claim neutrality on this one – having worked in a musical capacity with the ripple-haired minstrel on a few occasions. But, if it’s any consolation, nothing I ever write is neutral (ha! Had you fooled this whole time). Anyway – “Lavender Prayers.”

tahlia palmer: steady eye
the stage and i
When I was in primary school, I was convinced that I would become a famous actress when I grew up, admired like Nicole Kidman was in the nineties, or maybe I wanted to be like Claire Danes because her job required her to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio. I loved that guy so much. So there I was, child Tahlia, performing her cute little heart out. I did drama throughout highschool, was part of my local theatre group, did singing lessons, had excellent rhythm- I would have been a pretty rad triple threat. I would read plays all the time, perform in them, write them… and then in year 12 I dropped out of TEE Drama because the thought of fucking up the final performance terrified the fuck out of...

christopher isaacs: in the black box
It's Dark Outside at State Theatre Centre June 29-July14
This week (and the last month or so) I’ve been working on a new show, we open next Tuesday, preview on Wednesday. Now ethically I’m not writing to explicitly sell the show, but if you want to come see it go ahead, instead I’m writing to give an insight into the show, and for once (shebangs warning) I have actually been spending this week (and most of today) in a (here it is) blackbox (Shebangs).

The Benny Lackner Trio
at the ellington jazz club, perth
German-American jazz pianist BENNY LACKNER lived in the US almost 20 years, and about half of that in NYC. In the States he studied at the California Institute of the Arts under the direction of Charlie Haden and his mentor Brad Mehldau. He played many major jazz-clubs and festivals and formed his own trio that got a name for its personal way of interpreting standards as well as covers of songs of the current generation. His Trio's approach to both its original material and compositions, ranging from Monk to Prince, fuses intensity with unintrusive virtuosity. These reharmonizations of the familiar give the traditional form of piano trio a new identity and purpose in our own time. More info & tickets HERE!

beauty and the beast
at the old mill theatre, south perth
The Old Mill Theatre is staging the world premiere of the latest play from Hollywood writer and director David Stevens this June, best known for The Sum of Us, A Town Like Alice and Breaker Morant.
Described as a “love story re-invented”, The Beast and The Beauty re-works the classic tale of magic and enchantment and sets it in the Australian outback of the late 1880s.
The so-called beast is an ordinary man, horribly disfigured in a bushfire as a baby.
Director Mark DeFriest is bringing the show to life, a veteran of more than 800 hours of television drama in the US and Australia.
His credits include Cop Shop, The Sullivans, Prisoner, The Flying Doctors, Chances, Ocean Girl, Ship To Shore, Streetsmartz and the Doctor Who spin-off K-9, among many others.
The Beast and The Beauty plays at 8pm, June 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, July 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 with 2pm matinees July 1 and 8.
Tickets are $25, $20 concession – book on 9367 8719 or oldmilltheatre@iinet.net.au.

at studio underground, state theatre centre of wa
Created and performed by Tim Watts, Arielle Gray and Chris Isaacs.
Music composed by Rachael Dease
The creators of the international multi-award winning production The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer have created another heartfelt adventure. Using puppetry, mask, animation and live performance they deliver a grand epic western about redemption and dementia. As the sun sets, an old man and his noble tent go wandering into the wild. He is losing his mind. Swept up in a surreal world, he is on the run. Meanwhile, a mysterious tracker has caught the scent, and is hell bent on hunting him down. But while he can try and run away from the life he once knew, he can’t hide from everything.
