FREE Information workshops for Parents

Article image

The Parents Awareness Campaign offers free support for all parents in the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board area, to help them feel prepared to talk with their children about growing up, puberty, relationships and sexual health.

All schools in Scotland are now required to teach Sexual Health and Relationships Education, starting in Primary School. In order to complement this, staff from the Health Improvement Team (Sexual Health) are available to provide FREE workplace 'taster' sessions for parents, so that they feel more confident in speaking to their children. The 'taster' session includes topics such as:

Media Influences
• Age & Stage Appropriateness
• Puberty
• How to Answer Questions
• Internet Safety

In addition, a selection of leaflets and books are also available free of charge.

Typical feedback comments are:-.

People call it sex education, but it’s not really about sex, its all about emotions and growing up and them (children) feeling good about who they are”  - Mother of 3 and 6 year old.

It was a really good laugh –I thought I would be embarrassed but they (Talk 2 staff) made everyone feel comfortable” – Father of 12 year old.

Note: A workplace taster session will count as an activity towards your Healthy Working Lives Award.

To arrange a workplace taster session or for more information, call or text 07824623757 or visit www.talk2glasgow.com

Getting Help for Your Mental Health: Know Where to Go

In May this year the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) launched its new campaign, Know Where to Go. The campaign will assist people to get help for their mental health when they need it.

Know Where to Go responds to the need revealed by a YouGov poll commissioned by SAMH, which found that over 800,000 adults in Scotland wouldn’t know where to go for help if they had concerns about their mental health.

As well as encouraging people to seek help early if they are concerned about their mental health, Know Where to Go will also campaign for a wider range of treatments and support to ensure that help is available to people when it is needed.

A FREE Know Where to Go Guide, campaign materials and more information about the campaign’s key messages are available at :

Ahead For Health: FREE Mental Health Awareness DVD

A new DVD that promotes an enlightened approach to mental health among workers, including those in male-dominated industries, is now available FREE from the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives.

Ahead for Health aims to bring a more positive attitude to the discussion of mental health. It’s designed to be part of ‘toolbox talk’ discussions giving supervisors and staff the opportunity to discuss important work-related issues and make everyone aware of sources of support.

The Ahead for Health message stresses that:

  • Mental health and wellbeing is a key part of Health and Safety.
  • Effective Health and Safety relies on staff whose minds are focused on the job – issues with mental health and wellbeing can get in the way of that.
  • All businesses have staff who get stressed or depressed at times – it’s widespread and normal.
  • It’s easy to tackle it if you spot it and act early – retaining valued staff.
  • Often, it’s just easy things like living a bit healthier and looking after yourself that gets people back on top form.
  • Helping your staff accept and understand that these issues exist and are normal will help them to help their workmates – and alert you to potential issues.

The DVD can be used by human resources, occupational health and health and safety managers – or anyone with a responsibility for workplace education.

To order a copy of the Ahead for Health DVD visit: www.healthyworkinglives.com/aheadforhealth
