Welcome to another issue of Sweet bites.
It’s July when talk often turns to all things blood glucose during diabetes week in Australia (10-16 July). In this issue we talk about starches as the final frontier in understanding the impact of carbohydrates on glycemia. There’s plenty of debate about carbohydrates in diabetes management and we summarise a critical review on the use of low-carbohydrate diets in the management of type 2 diabetes. And speaking of low-carb, our second feature explores the theoretical, nutritional and planetary problems with the currently popular paleo diet.
And from the journals we check out a review of low-carb diets for managing type 2 diabetes, observational research which found the protective power of healthy foods outweighed the adverse effects of sweet treats, and a review of lifestyle interventions for children with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
