June 2018 The ORAMA project focuses on optimising data collection for primary and secondary raw materials in Member States. A cornerstone to the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials is the development of the EU knowledge base on primary and secondary raw materials, commenced by a series of European-funded projects. As the next iteration, ORAMA addresses specific challenges related to data availability, geographical coverage, accessibility, standardisation, harmonisation, interoperability, quality, and thematic coverage in Member States. It focuses on WEEE, Batteries, ELV, other mixed metal wastes and mining waste datasets. Join the ORAMA network in two minutes! We would love to keep you updated on ORAMA. If you would like to be kept informed about the latest project news and developments or contribute by providing data or other input, please register here . The challenges of mineral resource data in Europe - call for feedback! The EU is highly dependent on raw materials, which are essential for European industries, jobs and growth. Part of the strategy for assessing issues on security of supply of raw materials is to improve the quality and harmonisation of raw materials data. This is essential not just for investigating supply vulnerability at the European level, but also for facilitating information sharing at different levels within the EU. A key requirement of this data is to understand the resource potential of Europe, by evaluating known ‘geological stocks’ of raw materials using statistics for mineral resources and reserves. The ORAMA project team would be grateful if you could provide us with feedback you may have regarding the issues discussed here. This will help us shape the recommendations put forward for harmonisation of resource and reserve data. If you have any comments on any of these issues please get in touch with Tom Bide at the British Geological Survey (tode@bgs.ac.uk). Download the ORAMA leaflet and share it with your networks!More information about the project can be found in the leaflet we have produced for the project (it's available for download in English and Hungarian) as well as in the presentations and the first project reports published online. These, and any future publications, are available in our download area. First Progress Meeting of the ORAMA projectThe Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary (MBFSZ) hosted the first progress meeting of the ORAMA Project. The partners were able to discuss progress across the first 6 months of the project, plan for the next steps and discuss the challenges that ORAMA presents. We have presented ORAMA at different events across Europe:1) Annual Meeting of Aggregates Miners, Velence, Hungary, 1-2 March, 2018 Zoltán Horváth (Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary) presented the main objectives, the structure and partners of the ORAMA project. Information about the project was embedded into the EU-level concept for the development of mineral policies and data management. The importance of optimised datasets for both primary and secondary resources was highlighted with the related demonstration of the applicability and the need of stakeholder consultation as well. 2) UNECE EGRC Meeting, Geneva, 23-27 April, 2018 Four colleagues from the Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary took part in the 9th Annual Meeting of the Expert Group on Resource Classification (EGRC) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) between 23-27 April 2018 in Genève together with 346 participants from another 74 countries. 3) MIN-GUIDE workshop, Madrid, Spain, 23-24 May, 2018 ORAMA project was introduced by Zoltán Horváth (Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary, MBFSZ) on behalf of Perttu Mikkola (Geological Survey of Finland, GTK) at the MIN-GUIDE Meeting. ORAMA attended the Meeting in Spain to discuss the recent data management for primary and secondary raw materials and potential ways to improve it. In addition, Szilvia Bányácski (MBFSZ) talked about the legal background of waste management for mining waste facilities. 4) Workshop on Social Acceptance in the European Raw Materials Sector, Brussels, 5 June 2018 The European Commission's Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) held a workshop on the social acceptance of raw material production. The event was held on 5th of June and gathered together around 40 experts representing numerous projects and organisations dealing with different aspects of raw materials extraction, processing and use. The presentations given, both oral and poster, ranged from reports of work undertaken and experiences gained to outlines of work planned in new projects. 5) H2020 project cluster meeting supporting the European Union's Raw Materials Knowledge Base and Raw Materials Information System, EASME, Brussels 21st of June On 21st of June EASME and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) organised a workshop and clustering event for active, or recently concluded, H2020 projects that have connections to further the development of the European Union's Raw Materials Knowledge Base and Raw Materials Information System (RMIS). In addition to ORAMA, the other projects represented at the workshop included MIREU, ProSUM, MinFuture and Smart Ground . The idea of the workshop was to discuss and identify the potential input each project has for further development of the RMIS. ORAMA’s short term contribution to development will be to provide information which can be used for updating and completing the information behind the 12 “tiles” making up the RMIS’s basic structure. However in the long term ORAMA’s most significant contribution will be the improvements to the availability and inter-operability of data from various sources. These improvements will make up-to-date information on stocks and flows easily available for material system analysis and material flow analysis (MSA & MFA). ORAMA at the Raw Materials Week 2018ORAMA is planning to organise a clustering event during the Raw Materials Week 2018 which will take place from Monday 12 to Friday 16 November 2018 in Brussels. It builds upon a series of events organised by the European Commission addressing the latest developments on raw materials in the EU. It will be a unique opportunity for the raw materials community to discuss and exchange information and ideas on all relevant issues: policy, technology, international cooperation, framework conditions, knowledge base etc. Join our network and receive updates about our planned events and latest developments.
