Autumn Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the autumn edition of our newsletter. We hope you have been enjoying the warm weather of the last few months. In fact it has been so dry we have noticed trees, hedges and gardens suffering not to mention crops in the fields.

Enjoy our update in its new “look”. It matches our “new look” website. Check it out if you have a couple of minutes.

Autumn Colour Autumn has begun, and it’s likely to be a great year for autumn colour. A good summer increases the production of anthocyanins – the pigment that give the red colour to apples and grapes. As the leaves die and the green chemical chlorophyll gradually breaks down, leaves take on a reddish hue as more of the red pigment is revealed.

What to do in your garden now...

Planting – Autumn is generally the best time to plant so now is a good time to be thinking about what to plant in your garden this year, be it new trees, hedges, any planting scheme, large or small we can help…

Start to think about getting your fruit trees pruned, be it just for aesthetics, to keep your tree looking nice and the right size for the space or pruning specifically for fruit yield or even a combination of both.

It’s time to Mulch! – Keep the warmth in your soil. We can supply woodchip mulch, seasoned or green. Call us for further info.

Pest & Disease Watch

Good garden hygiene helps to prevent disease so it is vital to throw out or destroy affected leaves. Do not compost them or leave them lying as this can help to spread diseases over winter or such as Horse Chestnut leaf mining moth and Guignardia leaf blotch.

Fungal fruiting bodies will begin to appear in late September and early October indicating possible areas of infection. There are many harmless as well as harmful fungi that appear at this time so don’t be overly alarmed. Most importantly, anything that appears on or by the roots, or on the stem / in between the buttresses. If in doubt, give us a shout or email us over some photos if you prefer. Some fungi are beneficial to trees and also very beautiful, keep your eyes peeled. See what you can spot.

Team News:

Christian Gerrans has finished his first year at Merrist Wood College - well done Chris! Now starting on the first year of his NCH Arb - good luck Chris.

Adam Bolton having been with us for about a year and a half Adam is off travelling, starting in New Zealand. Bon voyage Adam. Send us a postcard.

We had a very interesting and challenging job to do a few weeks ago, A very large Corsican Pine at a local Hotel fell onto two cars & on the staff quarters. We like this kind of job, a challenge, something a bit different. We were there within an hour at approximately 1pm, the tree was completely removed by about 7pm. We needed to call in a local crane hire firm to help us out. We couldn’t save the cars, we did however manage to save any further damage to the staff quarters.
