NPF Award Winners Announced Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism: Dana BashDana Bash, CNN’s chief political correspondent, is being honored with the National Press Foundation’s Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. She has previously been recognized with three congressional reporting awards from NPF. Feddie Reporting Award: Christina JewettChristina Jewett of Kaiser Health News has won the National Press Foundation’s Feddie Reporting Award for her work that pried open a hidden database of medical equipment malfunctions. Clifford K. and James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons: Robert "RJ" MatsonCQ Roll Call cartoonist Robert “RJ” Matson has won the National Press Foundation’s Clifford K. and James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons. His cartoons are also syndicated by Cagle Cartoons and he previously worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The New York Observer. The judges also awarded an honorable mention to Rob Rodgers, the now-freelance cartoonist who was fired by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette over editorial differences. Rodgers was the 2015 winner of the Berryman award. Innovative Storytelling Award: "Code Red" project (NPR and the University of Maryland’s Howard Center for Investigative Journalism and Capital News Service)The National Press Foundation’s Innovative Storytelling Award has been awarded to an ambitious collaboration between NPR and the University of Maryland’s Howard Center for Investigative Journalism and Capital News Service for their “Code Red” project. Statehouse and Local Reporting Fellows AnnouncedNPF has selected 20 journalists for the upcoming “Spotlight on Statehouse and Local Reporting” fellowship. During the five-day training on Dec. 8-12, journalists will learn the ins and outs of covering local government and statehouses. Topics covered will include: accessing and localizing federal datasets; putting the impact of the federal government into context for readers; covering Congress and the White House from afar; tracking campaign money; using fact-checking and more. Covering The Heart BeatNPF will hold a fellowship that will look at all facets of heart health and heart disease: who is at risk, symptoms, preventive care, treatment, demographics, data and the latest science and medicine.
