BOFA

This year we introduce a new BOFA ....GENDER BOFA, where we find films from around the world dealing with women’s rights, gender equality and issues important to the LGBTI community.

GENDER BOFA

IWDA
FRIENDS OF THE FESTIVAL – IWDA

GENDER BOFA is supported by IWDA. The International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) is the leading Australian agency entirely focussed on women’s rights and gender equality in the Asia Pacific region.  IWDA’s vision is for a world where every woman and man, girl and boy has equal rights and opportunities. IWDA partners with others in the Asia Pacific region to advance women’s human rights and now partners with BOFA to bring you important films on gender issues.

The support of IWDA makes it possible to bring you these three remarkable films, acclaimed in film festivals around the world.

WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS
WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS

In What Tomorrow Brings director Beth Murphy follows one year in the life of the first all-girls school in a remote, conservative Afghan village, where fathers have never before allowed their daughters to be educated. The film traces the stories of those who bring the school to life: students, teachers, village elders, parents, and school founder, humanitarian Razia Jan. The film’s thought provoking themes will be discussed by the audience and the team from Project O, a Tasmanian based initiative of Big hART, helping young women develop new capabilities, learning how to become change-makers in their community.

WHO’S GONNA LOVE ME NOW?
WHO’S GONNA LOVE ME NOW?

Saar is a 39-year-old, ex-Israeli army, HIV positive gay man living in London, where he found refuge from the religious kibbutz where he grew up in Israel. Ever since he was diagnosed with HIV, Saar has craved his family's love, while they struggle with fears and prejudices. Saar and the rest of his surrogate brothers in the London Gay Men's Chorus provide a glorious soundtrack for this documentary about the power of forgiveness and the powerful pull that home has. As a US reviewer put it - “Who’s gonna love him now??  The audience.”

FATIMA
FATIMA

This warm and insightful film by Philippe Faucon was one of the under-the-radar hits at Cannes and won Best Film in the Cesar Awards, France’s version of the Oscars. Fatima moves from her Moroccan village at the age of 20, to live in France. Now, 20 years on, she still speaks French poorly and is constantly frustrated by her two teenage daughters, her pride and joy, but her greatest source of worry. One day, she begins to write to her daughters in Arabic, putting into words that which she has never been able to express in French.

COMMUNITY TAKES CHARGE – THE BOFA BIG DISCUSSION DEBATE
COMMUNITY TAKES CHARGE – THE BOFA BIG DISCUSSION DEBATE – A FREE EVENT

Lack of leadership and loss of trust in politicians are world-wide problems, but the solutions can be found in community-led change. The discussion will be moderated by film maker and activist, Associate Professor Gillian Leahy from the University of Technology, Sydney. The trailer for the inspiring film In the Shadow of the Hill will set the scene for a lively discussion with panellists Louise Morris (GETUP), Scott Rankin (BIGHART), Wendy Newton (City of Launceston), Festival Director Owen Tilbury and of course you, the audience. Have your say at this free BOFA event.
