Arc flash protection could not be any safer or easier to approach than it is today. Arcteq has launched a new family of low-voltage arc protection products with standardized application schemes.

Many times Low Voltage has been underestimated, however in those applications the high currents are just waiting the wrong moment to kick in with hazardous impact.

Arcteq LV ARC family with the world class quenching unit has already proven its effectivity and will continue to keep the electrical equipment and personnel safer now also with the Low Voltage applications.

The new LV arc flash protection product line is from hardware point of view very similar to the original MV product line, but the functionality and standard arc schemes are optimised for the LV switchgear installations.

The fully re-usable AQ-1000 arc quenching device operates on triggering signal from the AQ 100LV arc flash relay and closes the three phases together creating a low impedance path for the fault current to flow. System voltages drops and fault is extinguished in 4 milliseconds from its initiation.

The AQ-1000 is currently the only device on the market that fully complies to the highest class as resettable AQD to newly released IEC 60947-9-1:2018 arc quenching device standard.

At the E-World exhibition in Essen, the Arcteq and SAE-IT offering is for the first time on joint display.

Arcteq relays on the German market

In February 2020, Arcteq Relays and SAE-IT published a cooperation for the German market. The cooperation includes both protection relays and arc protection.

SAE-IT has a strong relationship with the distribution network operators in Germany. One target with the cooperation is to be able to offer a combined communication and protection solution with SAE-IT RTU and Arcteq feeder terminals in one supply.

Arcteq supplies arc protection relays to TNB

Arc protection business in Malaysia will continue growing in the new decade.

Arcteq has been supplying more than 3,500 arc protection relays and 15,000 arc point sensors to Southeast Asia’s largest power utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (commonly known as TNB) in Malaysia.

More than 200 number of 33 and 11 kV substations are currently installed and commissioned using the AQ 100 arc protection system. The remaining supply contracts will increase by approximately 1,000 relay units in 2020.

Compensated cable end differential protection

The most common non-human intruded fault location is the cable compartment, and more precisely the cable end. Cable faults often start by a small earth-leakage developing to full single-phase faults. Further, if not detected and tripped, the single-phase faults may develop to cross country or 3-phase faults.

To avoid these faults Arcteq has developed a proactive cable end differential protection in its AQ-200 series protection and control IEDs. The aim of the protection function is to provide an early detection of cable end fault. Typically cable end protection is implemented as an alarming function indicating the need of preventive maintenance.

“We began using cable end differential protection in 2015 as it was included by default in our Arcteq protection relays. Cable end faults rarely happen in substations but since it was included in the relays and its activation was easy, we thought it was a nice addition to the existing protections. Based on our experience, when you’re configuring cable end differential protection you should make sure you prevent it from being triggered by other faults. This way you can avoid false alarms.”

SWEDEN

First substation commissioned for the Swedish Railways

The first AQ-R215 protection relays are now commissioned in the Swedish railway network. The AQ-R215 is especially designed for Trafikverket in Sweden, and can protect 50 Hz and 16,7 Hz networks simultaneously.

In Autumn 2019, the Arcteq Relay local partner in Sweden Malthe Winje Power AB, signed two agreements with Trafikverket. The frame agreements comprise deliveries of protection relays for 50 Hz and 16,7 Hz power grids respectively. The protection relays are to be used for the power grids supplying the train network in Sweden.

The duration of the agreement for protection relays 16,7 Hz is two years with the option of an additional two plus two years. For protection relays 50 Hz, the duration is four years with the option of two plus two additional years.
