Happy New Year!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year from the staff of the CCPS Undergraduate Advising Center! This academic year is already halfway done and we just don't know where the time has gone! Although we had a delayed start to this semester, our office has been very busy to meet the needs of CCPS students!

Our office has had over 850 appointments with current students in this first half of the year and also welcomed about 45 new students for winter semester through the transfer and new student orientation process. Now we are gearing up for the next cycle of new admits who will begin orientation in March. We are also continuing to work with our current students to get ready for the March registration cycle. It's important that students meet with our office at least once a year to review their academic plans. Please encourage students you are in contact with to meet with an advisor and stay on track toward their degree goals.

We are getting a chance to take a deeper look at data we have been collecting and it indicates that we see on average 77% of the enrolled CCPS students at least once in the academic year! Considering that we do not have mandatory advising this is an amazing number of students who are using the services we provide!

We are continuing our search for the two open advising positions in our office and hope to have some news by the next newsletter (fingers crossed!).

Please remember to review our monthly newsletter (available the second Monday of the month) for news and information from our office that will benefit you and your students! Happy New Year!

Save the Date: MIACADA Conference

save the date MIACADA Conference

The Michigan Academic Advising Association will hold it's annual conference on May 30, 2014 on the campus of Central Michigan University. The keynote speaker is Paul Hernandez. If you haven't heard of him...you should definitely check him out!

From MEA.Org

He grew up in Los Angeles, affiliated with gangs, and nearly dropped out of high school! Today, Hernandez, an associate professor of sociology at Central Michigan University, channels the frustrations of his early years into engaging students like him and providing them with opportunities. He reminds students every day that they can reach their goals.

Hernandez created “College 101: Introducing At-Risk Students to Higher Education,” to help struggling middle and high school students. Hernandez, along with his team of student volunteers, help those students discover their passion for learning, and direct it into avenues for success. The experience is life-changing for these students, who go from potential high school dropouts to college students.

Since its creation in 2009, College 101 has helped more than 1500 students in both urban and rural schools throughout Michigan — at no cost to the students or their families. As part of the program, Hernandez visits participating school districts to offer assistance to students and teachers.

“I want to do an internship!”

This is something we hear in our office all of the time! We want to do what we can to make this process as smooth as possible for students exploring this possibility. To help with this we are offering an information session for students to get the information they need to put an internship into their plan.

Criminal Justice, Public and NonProfit Administration, Legal Studies and Hospitality and Tourism Management students are invited to this information session to learn more about the internship process for these majors.

Department internship coordinators will present information about the internship process, how to find an internship and program expectations.

Janean Couch from Career Services will provide tips and suggestions to help students prepare for the search process.

Date: January 28, 2014
Time: 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Location: University Club - 107C Richard M. DeVos Center
