An update on the Woolston Village UpgradeKia ora koutou and welcome to the first edition of our project newsletter for 2021. What we’ve doneWe’ve poured the new kerb and channel (gutter) at the east and west ends of our work site, rebuilt and asphalted the road shoulder (edge of the road) between St Johns Street and the New World truck exit and have finished the asphalt at the Portman Street corner. What’s coming upThis week we will:Start work on the last 25 metres of storm water drainage work on the north side of Ferry Road, between the car park beside Night N’ Day and the Woolston Pharmacy. Pour the remaining section of kerb and channel (now we’ve finished the tricky section of storm water drainage work between the New World truck exit and Woolston library). Continue road shoulder and footpath work. Install temporary traffic loops (activation sensors) at the new signalised pedestrian crossing between St John’s Church and Finders Keepers. We’ll do this at night to minimise the impact on nearby businesses. After Waitangi weekend:Council’s traffic light specialists will check the functionality of the lights then they’ll be ready for use. Late January/early February:When work moves away from the Portman Street intersection, one team will start work on the south side of Ferry Road at the entrance to the Three Boys Brewery car park. We’ll deliver information and speak to affected businesses before this work starts. Mr Fix-ItNeil Andrews is the person who comes to the rescue when roadworks go wrong in Woolston. He’s a fan of a good yarn, so especially enjoys the memories and stories that long-time residents of Woolston like to share. Need more information? Key features of the upgradeWe’re upgrading Woolston Village and part of Ferry Road. This will make the village a safer and more attractive place to walk, bike and drive. We’re renewing underground wastewater pipes at the same time to minimise disruption to the public. A place to parkThere will be 55 on-street car park spaces on this section of Ferry Road plus time-restricted parking to allow for higher turnover. A place for walkingWider footpaths and improved crossing facilities in the village, including signal controlled crossings & upgraded street lighting. Lower speed limitsThe speed limit has been lowered to 30km/h on Ferry Road between Portman Street and St Anne’s School.
