 Nutrition in OSHC 2020
Theme 3 - Positive Meal Times

Welcome to the third Nutrition in OSHC theme for the subscription year - Positive Meal Times. This very important topic encompasses a range of Quality Areas within the National Quality Standard and will be explored in depth by the Nutrition in OSHC team over three months, from October to December 2020.

Do you have any meal time questions that you would like answered in upcoming newsletters? Please email them to oshc@naqld.org.

Meal Times Around the World

Element 5.1.2 - Dignity and rights of the child
The dignity and rights of every child are maintained

Assessors may observe: How the service celebrates diversity, including guiding children’s understanding of cultural diversity

Meal time traditions and routines can vary around the world. Below we have listed a few meal time routines that you may be able to incorporate into learning experiences, cooking activities and meal times at your OSHC setting.

Morocco
These meals can be served on low tables surrounded by comfy cushions. Meal times with family and extended family play an important part of daily life.

India
It is an Indian custom to eat with your right hand. Remember to wash your hands first!

European Countries
In these countries, salads may be served after rather than before the main dish.

South Korea
It is a sign of respect and an important custom for everyone to wait to eat until the oldest person/people lifts their utensil (i.e. chopstick or spoon) before everyone starts eating.

Japan
Dishes usually come in their own utensil – they don’t mix their foods together on one plate. Chopsticks are commonly used.

How to eat with chopsticks:

  • Hold your chopsticks towards their end, and not in the middle or the front third
  • When you are not using your chopsticks and when you are finished eating, lay them down in front of you with the tip to left
  • Do not pass food with your chopsticks directly to somebody else’s chopsticks
  • Do not move your chopsticks around in the air too much, nor play with them
  • Do not move around plates or bowls with chopsticks
  • To separate a piece of food into two pieces, exert controlled pressure on the chopsticks while moving them apart from each other

Intuitive Eating

Element 2.1.3 - Healthy Lifestyle
Healthy eating and physical activity are promoted and appropriate for each child

Assessors may observe: Educators engaging children in experiences, conversations and routines that promote relaxed and enjoyable meal times and promote healthy, balanced lifestyles

Did you know that children have a natural ability to self-regulate their eating in response to their hunger cues? It can be hard as an adult to accept that sometimes when children say they are 'not hungry' or 'don't want anymore food', that they are actually telling the truth!

Below is a link to a short video that explores the concept of intuitive eating and how listening to children's hunger and fullness cues can help to create positive meal times.

Some of the key takeaway messages around intuitive eating include:

  • Adults provide, children decide
  • Let children decide how much they will eat
  • Food should not be used as a reward or punishment
