As panicked, bulk buying continues to cripple supermarkets and bring hundreds of people into close proximity, Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City, University of London, argues that the retailers can’t be expected to lead on ensuring key foods and other supplies reach the people they urgently need to.
Lang, one of the UK’s leading food supply experts, argues that a form of government rationing is now needed. He and two colleagues have today written to the prime minister calling for a new healthy food-led rationing approach by government. He explains here why this is needed, and why he was calling for a change in the way the UK supplies its food long before the emergence of this coronavirus.
Meanwhile, if you are newly working from home, consider these tips from Fuschia Sirois, a psychologist at the University of Sheffield. And in dealing with the full horror of the coronavirus pandemic, Italy has seen its world-famous urban spaces change dramatically. Rosa Tamborrino of the Politecnico di Torino reports on how even in isolation amid tragedy, there is hope.
