Once a Marine, always a Marine. It’s a motto that 90-year-old Hugh Ewart has lived by since volunteering for national service during World War II at the age of 18.
“During my time at the original Commando Training Camp at Achnacarry during WWII, I was prepared to encounter every natural obstacle we could possibly face during service in the field. Churchill set up the Commandos to take on the toughest challenges of the war and that is exactly what we were trained for.
Every day we were faced with the most extreme conditions – I was there in November so it definitely was not a walk in the park. My experience at the Commando Training Centre was invaluable to my time in service, as well as my life post-war. It helped make me the man I am today.”
An Ambassador for Commando Spirit, it was an honour to have Hugh and his family join us at Achnacarry for the third year running. He greatly inspired everyone during the Friday night briefing and out on the course with dits about his experiences of the area during his own Commando training
