Smart Recycling Cart to be delivered this week

The City of Ridgeland will start its new recycling program on October 1.  Waste Management will replace 18-gallon recycling bins with the new 64-gallon carts starting on September 24. Leave your bin on the curb for pick up. The new cart will be delivered to you one day this week.

An informative letter about the city's new recycling program will be be delivered to you in the coming days. Until then, please use the new cart just like the old one. A label on the side of the cart will provide a simple reference about what is recyclable and what is not. Further details about recyclables can be found on the label on the lid of the cart. As always, you may mix recyclables.  Recycling collection days will change for some residents. You will be notified in a couple of days about the route changes.

What makes it a smart cart? A Radio Frequency Identification Tag is embedded in the cart, and it is linked to your household's address. When the recycling truck empties your cart, Recyclebank records that activity for your account that earns rewards based on our community's recycling efforts. It is also smart because the larger cart will make is easier for households to recycle more and throw away less. As said by Mayor McGee, "Ridgeland is leading the way in Mississippi in recycling. We are the first city to transition from recycling bins to carts."

You may contact the Public Works Department at 601-853-2027 if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting the City of Ridgeland recycling program.
