Men's Pronghorn Hockey Starts Earlier Friday Night

The Pronghorns men's hockey team is giving fans some bonus action this weekend when they host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Horns will play an additional period Friday night in advance of the teams' regularly scheduled contest. The bonus hockey comes virtue of the Oct. 1 suspended game, when a malfunctioning ice resurfacing machine postponed the third period.

The Horns, who were trailing the Huskies 3-0 at the time, will resume that game at approximately 6:40 p.m. Friday night.

The regular game will then follow. Saturday night's game time remains unchanged, 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Inline Image

Operation Red Nose closed off operations in the early hours of 2012 with several new records, more community support -- and cash in the bank for Pronghorn Athletics.

This year, the Operation Red Nose team generated more than $23,000 in cash donations, $20,000 in cash from community sponsorships, plus an additional $10,000 in gifts-in-kind (promotion, fuel, and donations of coffee and snacks to keep the teams operating in the wee hours of the morning).

Here are the final numbers:

Rides – 1428
Volunteers – 693
Donations – $23,619

Organizer Sandy Slavin thanks all who volunteered, donated, and supported the operation Red Nose group through its busiest season ever. The increase in volunteers meant more calls, which ultimately meant more support for the Pronghorn teams.

5 questions with . . . Dr. Aaron Gruber

Dr. Aaron Gruber received his PhD in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, writing his dissertation on computational models of working memory and its modulation by dopamine. He joined the faculty at the University of Lethbridge in 2009.

"For as long as I can remember, I have wondered why people often want things that they don’t need or that ultimately lead to poor outcomes. This could be a third helping of ice cream, an expensive and impractical car, or a pack of cigarettes. Where do these desires come from and why are some people better able to resist such temptation?"
