Editor's note

Though you may not have heard of it, one of the most important political events of 2017 will commence in Beijing next week: the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The meeting will have enormous implications for China and the rest of the world.
A major shake-up of the Communist Party’s leadership is expected, and whoever ends up on the seven-member Politburo Standing Committee, China’s highest body, will govern the world’s largest military and the second largest economy for the next five years.
Ryan Manuel, AsiaGlobal Fellow at the University of Hong Kong, helps explain this high stakes event that looms as a test of Xi Jinping’s power and his vision of a more assertive China.
