I’m very excited that May is finally here!  With the great spring weather upon us many people are looking to get in top shape for the summer season. Often when people start a weight management program, they look to increase their protein and vegetable consumption but also decrease their carb consumption.   Most people aren’t aware of the many benefits healthy grains  “carbs” are to long term healthy weight management. Equally important to getting your body into peak condition is being aware of how well your digestive system is functioning, how well is it extracting the nutrients from the foods we are eating. One of the important aspects to a healthy functioning digestive system is having a healthy bacteria flora. Yes, we have live bacteria in our gut to help with a whole host of functions including digestion.  Prebiotics is a relatively new area growing in popularity as they have been shown to help the natural bacteria in our system.  The information below expands on these topics in greater details providing some valuable insights into healthy grains and how to improve our digestive functioning.

Organic Grains

Often it’s difficult to get abundant whole organic grains into our diet and the information is sometimes confusing when it comes to consuming carbohydrates. Take a look at this link that specifically discusses how switching to a diet rich in slowly digested carbohydrates could help to reduce inflammation in overweight and obese people according to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Click here to learn more.

Oat Beta-Glucan

Oats contain a specific type of fiber called oat beta-glucan.  Oat beta-glucans have been proven to be beneficial in a number of health areas including;  heart health, blood pressure, blood glucose balance, and even satiety -  keeping you feeling full longer.

Here’s a great youtube clip that shows the health benefits of oatbeta glucans  and how they bind to fat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvEqNEm4GOM

Prebiotics

What are they and why do I need them?  Many people may have heard of probiotics, the beneficial microorganisms that supports health.  The breakdown of the word “Probiotic” translates to “for life”.  Prebiotics, on the other hand, serve as food for probiotics, which in turns promotes a healthy flora in our digestive tract. In addition to promoting a healthy gastrointestinal tract and reducing constipation, inulin can stimulate your bone health by enhancing calcium absorption, and lower the risk of atherosclerosis by decreasing blood triglyceride levels. http://www.ias.ac.in/jbiosci/dec2002/703.pdf  Chicory root is an herb that has the highest prebiotic fiber content by weight.

Healthy Skepticism

by Rob DeBoer

As a former college football and baseball player at the University of South Carolina and a 15 year veteran in the personal training and athlete training space, to say I was an industry skeptic was an understatement.  In fact, it's my opinion that skepticism should be an inherent trait for any reputable trainer.  So when a trusted friend first shared with me the cPRIME technology from EvolvHealth and the potential benefits, not only was I skeptical and close-minded, I was downright demeaning. Despite the non-threatening "try it before you buy it" offer, I was so full of pride (as most of us trainers are) that without even trying the product, my decision had already been made--cPRIME was just another gimmick for gullible people willing to try anything. Well, I  have been wearing and sharing the cPRIME technology ever since. My wife won't take it off, my 78 year old father swears by it, my 15 year old athlete won't compete without it and the stories go on and on.

So why the change of heart?  It was actually a change of mind. So often in the health and fitness industry, we become close minded to anything that we don't understand or can't fully explain. The truth is--that approach is really a dis-service to our clientele. That doesn't mean we throw caution into the wind and try anything, but it does mean we should open up our minds and weigh the evidence when it comes to health and wellness products that can add value to people's lives.  So what evidence did I weigh with cPRIME as there are many products out there making the same or similar claims? Click read more below to find out.
