Association spotlight

Qatar Diabetes Association is pleased to participate in the upcoming IDF Congress 2011 and also proud that Dubai has been selected as the congress venue. This is the first World Diabetes Congress to be organized in the Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA), it is a perfect opportunity to exchange information especially across the region.

The congress comes at a critical time, due to the fact that diabetes currently affects more than 366 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 552 million by 2025.

The variety of session types will provide the delegates with the latest scientific information, leading to an exchange of best practices related to diabetes care, prevention and education.

It is also expected that the World Diabetes Congress 2011 will influence policy makers and local health authorities to create national diabetes plans and to make diabetes a health priority. We also hope the Congress will facilitate the implementation and monitoring of evidence-based policy and planning emerging from the UN NCD Summit.

On World Diabetes Day, November 14th, QDA will be planning a lot of activities. The Aspire Tower and Museum of Islamic Art on 14th November will be lit in blue. We are also hosting a diabetes walk on 18th November, where we expect more than 6000 participants.. A diabetes friendly healthy eating Programme will be available at the Sheraton Hotel and Millennium for a week starting from 14th Nov – 21st Nov, as well as   healthy menu on Qatar Airways, Diabetes Chat on TV & radio and diabetes articles in leading Arabic & English newspapers.

I look forward to meeting many new colleagues in Dubai. We believe that our participation in the World Diabetes Congress will be an interesting and positive experience.

Good luck and best wishes.
