'Collision' is this year's opera offering, bringing together scenes from Carmen, Chicago, Albert Herring, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables, The Marriage of Figaro and more... all based around the theme 'Love is War'. Don't miss seeing the next generation of singing talent in action - get your tickets now.

Love is War. And the Battle Rages On.

Collision brings together some of New Zealand’s finest young singing talent in a stunningly presented production at the Memorial Theatre. Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music classical voice students perform scenes from Opera, Operetta and Musical Theatre around ideas of love, loss, and fighting for what is right. 

 

NZSM Orchestra 
Smorchasbord

The NZSM Orchestra performs a 'smorchasbord' of works by Villa-Lobos, Tchaikovsky, Jenny McLeod, Bruckner and NZSM’s own DMA student Sarah Ballard.

Reuben Chin, winner of the 2016 NZSM/WYO Concerto Competition (Chamber Orchestra category), will be featured as soloist performing Villa-Lobos' Fantasia Para Saxophone.

 

The Hunter Gathering #4: Legends

When: 6pm, Thursday 22 September

Our short and sweet event series featuring ‘not just music’. Violinist Martin Riseley will perform Bach's legendary Chaconne for solo violin, which Joshua Bell called 'not just one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, but one of the greatest achievements of any man in history.'

Dr Richard Millington from the School of Languages and Cultures will give a talk on the Faust legend - its legacy and retellings. 

And for the final piece in the programme, Martin Riseley will be joined by Rafaella Garlick-Grice (piano) to perform Violin Concerto No. 1 by a legendary composer and violinist—who else but Paganini? 

 

Allen Vizzutti Masterclass

Fresh from the NZSO/Rodger Fox Big Band 'Swing into Spring' tour, trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti will present a public masterclass at the NZSM.

Vizzutti is lauded across the globe for his stunning musicianship, easy control and lyrical playing. 

 

Judith Clark Memorial Piano Series - Diedre Irons

When: 4pm, Sunday 18 September

Our Judith Clark Memorial Piano Series got off to a great start last month with a sold-out concert by Michael Houstoun. In the second concert of the series, Diedre Irons plays a programme of Haydn, Debussy and Liszt. We can't wait!
 

 

Composers Competition

The Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music Composers Competition is an annual event that showcases some of the best works written in the last year by students of the NZSM Composition and Sonic Arts programme. Nine finalists have been selected this year, with pieces ranging from jazz ensemble to wind quintet to multichannel loudspeaker works.

Prizes kindly donated by The Lilburn Trust.

 

NZSM Jazz Combo Competition

When: 5pm, Thursday 15 September
Where: Studio 310
Cost: Free entry

Who will be the top NZSM Jazz Combo for 2016? Come along and hear some of our best jazz students perform out of their skins.  Judging is based on technical proficiency, overall musicianship and original handling of standards.

The winning group wins $1000 and a paid gig for the Wellington Jazz Club.

A native of New Zealand, Simon O’Neill has established himself as one of the finest helden-tenors on the international stage.

Grayson Gilmour, an NZSM graduate with an MMA in Film Composition, and winner of the 2015 APRA Award for Best Original Music in a Feature Film, presents at Composer Workshop on 7 September.

Dr Bonnie McConnell from Australian National University presents at Music Forum on Friday 9 Sept at 3:10pm;

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is joined by 19 jazz musicians from the Rodger Fox Big Band to play a concert of new arrangements including Fanfare for the Common Man, The Meaning of the Blues, and excerpts from West Side Story.

NZTrio concert: Fa 发

Renowned guzheng soloist Xia Jing 夏菁 accompanies NZTrio in Gao Ping’s world premiere of his new work Feng Zheng (Kite). Three other new commissions by New Zealand composers Dylan Lardelli, Jeroen Speak, and Dorothy Ker will also feature.
