Council adopts Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan

On 14 March 2016 Council unanimously adopted the Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan. The Mayor and Councillors praised the collaboration between community and staff to achieve the Plan.

Council and community representatives have already met to discuss options for ongoing community involvement in the Plan's implementation. A wrap-up and celebration meeting with the community and Council staff is being planned - watch this space.

Listen to a radio interview with Manager of Council's Integrated Planning Department, Sharon Pope, and resident Fiona Taylor.

This e-newsletter will now feature news relating to planning for Pelican and Blacksmiths and implementing the Marks Point and Belmont South Plan.

City wins big with sustainability grant funding

Council has secured grant funding to the value of $479,893 to assist in the delivery of priority sustainability projects. On top of this, Council will contribute $337,327 from existing budgets. Projects relevant to local adaptation planning include:

Citywide Dune Ecosystem Enhancement Program - on-ground works to increase dune resilience. Dune shaping and fencing will occur on Council-managed land north of Blacksmiths beach adjacent to the Belmont golf club and south of Redhead beach.

Restoring functionality of degraded foreshores - on-ground works to rehabilitate eroding foreshores at priority locations using a mix of proven techniques, and the refinement of proven treatments to trial innovative techniques to deal with projected sea level rise.

Citizen science and foreshore inundation - on-ground works to trial tidal flaps on selected drain outlets at Marks Point and Belmont South to assess the feasibility of this technology. Council is seeking local volunteers to monitor performance of the tidal flaps over a 12 month period. To get involved, contact Greg Giles on 4921 0714 or at ggiles@lakemac.nsw.gov.au

Assessing Housing Stock Vulnerability to Climate Change Impacts - analysis to assess vulnerability of current housing stock in selected areas of the City to determine construction material and style, age and exposure to environmental hazards. It is anticipated the project will identify options that could be adopted to modify dwellings to make them more resilient to flood and storm hazards.

Geotechnical Assessment of Cliff Top Stability in High Hazard Locations - analysis of locations identified as high risk from coastal cliff instability and in proximity to assets such as roads, services and homes. The assessment will recommend suitable development setbacks and planning controls.

Living Creek Corridors - on-ground works to stabilise streambanks and rehabilitate riparian vegetation in priority tributaries through the lake catchment.

Green Army Disaster Recovery - Council has been successful in becoming a Project Sponsor to host three Green Army teams as part of the Disaster Recovery round. The teams will assist in recovery of natural areas following the April 2015 storm event, and work to improve the health of streambanks and foreshore areas.

Read the Council Report 16STRAT005 for more information about these projects.

Community question and answer session held with Council staff and coastal managers

On Thursday 17 April, residents were given the opportunity to engage with Council staff and independent specialists in coastal, channel and flooding management, and to explore ways we can plan for future uncertainty. We have captured some of the discussion here, and will draw on information provided by the speakers at upcoming community workshops.
