The Network
Welcome to The Network, the newsletter for University of the Highlands and Islands students.
During March students will have the opportunity to tell us what they think: whether nominating an inspiring lecturer in the Student-Led Teaching Awards, suggesting an Alumnus of the Year or voting in the UHISA Elections, there's lots going on.
This email was sent to you, a student at UHI - if these details are incorrect please update them.
UHI Alumnus of the year - do you know someone?
Do you know someone who has achieved success after studying at UHI? Nominations are now open for the UHI Alumnus of the Year 2010/11
To make a nomination, send a completed nomination form to Linda Robichaud by Monday 4 April.
UHI Students - doing it for charity
Ten years of music tuition at North Highland College UHI will be celebrated with a charity single by students based in Alness.
The single was written, performed and produced by present and past students on the HNC music performance and sound production course.
Scholarships for Inverness College UHI students
Inverness College UHI students have been awarded scholarships by the Institution of Civil Engineers. The organisation had two scholarships on offer in Scotland and both have come to the Highlands.
Kenna Scott is in her final year of NC civil engineering and is employed by Moray Council. She hopes to progress onto the part-time HNC civil engineering programme.
Jamie Nicholas is in his first year of the HNC Civil Engineering part-time course and is employed by Morrison Construction.
Kenna and Jamie will receive £1,500.
Online enrolment - changes coming
UHI Records is a web service that allows students and staff to view and update UHI student data. Over the summer, UHI is rolling out online enrolment for all returning higher education students so they can “pre-enrol” onto their 2011-12 courses.
If you’re studying HNC Tourism, HNC Hospitality, HNC Professional Cookery, HNC Business or HND Hospitality Management you can now increase your qualifications and continue to the BA Tourism and Hospitality Practice.
The degree is very well balanced between theory and practice, and you’ll spend time working in local tourism and hospitality businesses, plus work placement opportunities here and abroad.
Every year the UHI Students’ Association (UHISA) run the Student Led Teaching Awards which allow UHI students to nominate a lecturer or several lecturers for one of seven awards.
The awards highlight and reward the different ways that lecturing staff across the UHI go the extra mile to create a fantastic student experience, support those who need support, and think innovatively about how they teach you.
Student Elections - use your vote
The UHI Students’ Association will soon be holding their annual elections. 16 executive posts up for grabs including two full time paid positions.
We'd love to know what you think about The Network, so spare us a couple of minutes and complete our online survey - you could win yourself a £40 book token!
Location: I live in Elgin and study at Moray College UHI
About me: I am 30 years old and a single parent of two boys (10 & 12) with two pythons and a German Shepherd, I love reading – thrillers and horror mainly, cross-country running and walking my dog.
My UHI: I’m doing my honours year at the moment. Throughout the course of my degree, I have grown in self-confidence and am more willing to try new things; it has been a real turning point in my life as I have learned a lot about myself. I'm also currently standing for UHISA President.
My time: I feel like I spend all my time studying but I also I run a cross-country club for primary school children where I provide coaching and enter them in local events. I’m a student mentor and class rep too. The UHI has given me the ability to provide a stable future for my children hence I am always volunteering for scrutiny panels, focus groups etc.
My dreams: Apart from saving the world, I want to stop child abuse and I also want to get a PhD in child psychology before I’m 40.
