Possibly the best gossip to come out of the Met Gala was news of tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and musician Grimes’s budding romance. What you may not have clocked is the bizarre way that they met – thanks to Roko’s Basilisk, a “terrifying” philosophical thought experiment about artificial intelligence. Sophie Ward explains.
If you thought comics were all about laughs and biff, bang, pow, think again. Golnar Nabizadeh runs through her top seven graphic works with something profound to say about humanity – touching on everything from Afghan war survivors to a mother who loses her two-year-old boy to heart surgery.
There’s a type of lizard in New Guinea that bleeds lime green blood. The lizards’ veins are filed with a kind of toxic bile that overpowers the colour of red blood cells, and yet the animals seem to suffer no ill effects. Anita Malhotra explains how new research into the lizards’ evolutionary origins could help narrow down the explanation for this quirk of nature.
Also on the site: the non-violent protesters in Gaza who have been robbed of their voice by Leonie Fleischmann, and why greener fuels may not make shipping safer, by Paul Davies.
