Welcome to new subscribers...
Firstly, welcome to those of you who are receiving this newsletter for the first time. I hope you find the information contained within interesting.
This newsletter is published every two months and contains information on different topics related to health and wellbeing.
This month, we talk about Metabolic Syndrome and introduce Myotherapy.
Don't risk Metabolic Syndrome....
Metabolic syndrome is the term given to a cluster of health conditions which, when they occur together, dramatically increase your risk of diabetes, heart attack or stroke and if left unaddressed can, in the long term cause damage to your heart, kidneys, liver and arteries.
Generally speaking, someone is considered to have metabolic syndrome if they have a waist circumference of more than 102cm for men or 88cm for women along with two or more of the following:
- Raised fasting glucose levels
- High blood pressure
- High triglycerides
- Low HDL cholesterol (i.e. the "good" cholestoerol).
Is this you or someone you know? It is estimated that up to one quarter of the Australian population might meet this criteria.
So, what causes these problems?
All of these problems are caused or made worse by poor management of diet and lifestyle. Factors such as a diet with excessive calories and high in processed foods and sugar, lack of exercise, too much poorly controlled stress and perhaps a body which is not detoxifying effectively all contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome. In some respects, they simply prevent your body from doing its job of regulating the levels of sugars and fats in the blood and things start to slowly go downhill from there.
However, the good news is you can do a lot to correct these problems before they take hold. It doesn't have to be difficult to make improvements to your diet and your naturopath can help you to make simple and effective long lasting changes. In addition to diet and lifestyle advice, we have a wonderful arsenal of nutritional and herbal supplements which can support your health by improving your cholesterol profile, helping you to lose weight, increase your energy and ability to handle stress.
But don't leave it until it is too late......take action now and your elderly self will thank you. Call 9620 9503 to make an appointment with Kaye, our naturopath, for a health assessment and to get you on the road to good health.
Introducing myotherapy...what can it do for you?
Myotherapy is wonderful for the treatment of pain resulting from injury, muscle stiffness or loss of mobility.
A treatment session includes assessment of the problem, manual treatment and advice for ongoing management of the condition to provide lasting relief.
Some of the symptoms which respond well to myotherapy include deep and constant aches, muscle tightness, tenderness in localised areas of the muscle (trigger points), reduced muscle and joint mobility, numbness or tingling sensation, fatigue and weakness.
Myotherapy can be useful for a wide range of injuries and conditions including;
* Overuse or repetitive strain injuries
* Strains or sprains
* Stress (occupational, emotional, environmental)
* Poor posture
* Headaches
* Sports or occupational injuries
* Chronic musculoskeletal or neuromuscular disorders
* Acute or traumatic injuries
* Pre and post natal conditions
* Some joint stiffness or pain
Depending on the particular condition, myotherapy treatment may involve a combination of modalities including trigger point therapy, dry needling therapy, massage (deep tissue, sports, pregnancy), myofascial release, TENS therapy, cupping, stretching, corrective exercises/advice, heat therapy and cryotherapy.
Myotherapy treatment aims to improve the patient’s understanding of the condition, reduce pain, increase their range of motion, decrease the occurrence, and to help manage their condition.
We now have a degree qualified myotherapist available at our clinic. She is currently working here on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Appointments are available for 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes (60 minutes is required for a first consultation) and health fund rebates may apply depending on your fund and level of cover. Please call LaVida Health on 9620 9503 to make an appointment.
