Mr. Ge died by suicide while in the custody of the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania, the first such death in a Northeast facility this year. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. While the death of any person in government custody is a tragic and serious event, Mr. Ge’s death is a stark reminder of the urgent imperative for measures and oversight to monitor and prevent injury or fatality, including by suicide, of anyone in the custody of any government agency. We know that this incident may increase fears around immigration enforcement in our communities. It is critical that community-based organizations like CPC have the necessary resources to continue to work alongside partner organizations and government at all levels to ensure that the communities we serve can interact positively with government, including language access support, connection to public programs and resources, know-your-rights trainings (including the right to counsel), as well as other legal and civic education. CPC is committed to ensuring that all our community members have the information, resources, and services so that they can confidently navigate their daily lives. CPC urges the prompt release of the investigation's findings into Mr. Ge’s death as well as urgent action from the government to ensure the health, safety, and dignity of every single person who interacts with government agencies of any kind.
