Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tūāhuririri and Matapopore have gifted a special name – He Puna Taimoana – to the hot pools under development in New Brighton.
He Puna Taimoana is a modern name, reflecting the hot pools are part of the regeneration of New Brighton. The name, translated as “coastal pools” or “seaside pools”, reflects the location of the pools and surrounding environment. Families will enjoy beautiful sea views from the terraced pools, the blue ocean and its ever-changing colours.
Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Megan Woods has approved an intergenerational plan for regenerating the red zone land along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.
The plan provides a vision and objectives for the short, medium and long-term use of 602 hectares of red zone land in the east of Christchurch.
This includes creating a Green Spine either side of the Avon River that will stretch from the central city to New Brighton. Read more on Newsline.
New Brighton Clock Tower makeover underway
Restoration on New Brighton's landmark clock tower is underway, led by heritage-experienced contractors Cook Brothers Construction Canterbury. The work is expected to take about six months to complete.
A report setting out options for responding to the earthquake legacy issues along the Southshore and South New Brighton estuary edge has been considered Christchurch City Council. Read more on Newsline.
Community Funding
In the last month the Board granted the following:
$290,485 to 56 community groups and organisations from its Strengthening Communities Fund to strengthen community wellbeing throughout Coastal-Burwood.
Funding of $2,150 for six groups from its Youth Development Fund, including a grant of $500 from its 2019-20 Youth Development Fund to Cara Mustchin towards the costs of her flights to attend the New Zealand Under 16 Girls’ Touch team tour of Australia from 14 to 22 September 2019.
$31,000 for seven projects from its Discretionary Response Fund including $2,500 towards Summer with your Neighbours.

Get ready to stride into spring by booking a spot for The Breeze Walking Festival.
Festival programmes will be available at Christchurch City Council libraries and Service Centres or online from 19 August.
Among this year’s family friendly feature walks are several festival highlights, including a Dogs’ Day Out in the Zone on 29 September, Gruffalo Explorers in Bottle Lake Forest (2 October), The Generation Game at Travis Wetland (6 October), Pukeko Stomp at MacLeans Island (8 October) and Adventure on Te Ara Ihutai Christchurch Coastal Pathway (13 October).
Hundreds of messages and mementoes left as tributes following the 15 March mosque attacks will be displayed at Christchurch Art Gallery on the six-month anniversary of the tragedy. Read more on Newsline.
