Celebrating our Centennial Year!

Greetings friends of the Belton! It feels like spring here in West Glacier. The sun is shining almost every day, snow is getting patchy under the trees, and there are already reports that the bears are out in Glacier Park – tracks and fresh diggings have been reported in both Lake McDonald and Many Glacier areas.

We are excited to be celebrating our Centennial year with Glacier National Park this summer!  We rang in the New Year with our much anticipated New Year's Eve Celebration.  The halls were decked with beautiful greenery and twinkling lights, and guests arrived in their vintage costumes and formal attire to enjoy a full evening of dining, dancing, and general revelry. We were entertained by the old-time mountain string band Old Slouch Hat, and period pieces by the String Crossings trio.

Reliving Our History

On June 27, 1910, the Belton Chalet opened its doors to guests stepping off the train, arriving from St. Paul/Minneapolis. These were the first tourists to Glacier National Park. They arrived with their belongings in trunks, and were dressed in near-formal attire. The staff of the Belton were dressed in Swiss costumes, and welcomed guests to the new Swiss style Chalet, the first in a series of Lodges and Chalets built for tourism in Glacier by the Great Northern Railway. In memory of our beginnings, those Swiss costumes have been recreated for our dining room staff and guests to experience once again.
