Business & growth

Solent LEP: Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk had his first meeting with the Solent local enterprise partnership this week during a visit to the Royal Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth.

Regional Growth Fund: Sir Ian Wrigglesworth visited Plymouth at a road show to promote the second round of the Regional Growth Fund and encourage bidders to compete for a share of £950m.

Free online public procurement course: ‘Winning the Contract’, a free online course aimed at helping smaller firms to bid for government contracts, has been re-launched.

Two new export advisory services launched: The Export Control Organisation, the UK's regulatory strategic export licensing authority, has launched two new advisory services - the Control List Classification Advice Service and the End-User Advice Service.

Higher Education & science

The benefits of Higher Education: It's Universities Week - find out the latest information and advice on student finance, university fees and tuition fees.

New phase of UK India Research and Education Initiative: Science Minister David Willetts has invited proposals for £5 million of annual funding for collaborations between the UK and India in the areas of skills development, innovation partnerships and education.

Intellectual Property

Protecting SMEs' IP rights: Small and medium sized businesses are set to benefit from a new law which will give them easier access to justice to protect their patent and design rights. A damages cap of £500,000 for claims made in the Patents County Court means small companies claiming damages up to that amount are less likely to face a potentially more expensive trip to the High Court.

Lights, camera, action: Baroness Wilcox, Intellectual Property Minister, took centre stage at Pinewood Studios to discover how changing technologies are affecting the industry and what the government can do to help the sector’s economic growth.

Postal Services Bill: Government legislation to safeguard the future of Royal Mail and keep the Post Office in public ownership has been agreed by both Houses of Parliament.
