Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc.

CPC's 60th Anniversary Gala will take place on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Cipriani Wall Street.

We are excited to announce our first distinguished honoree, Nelson Louis, in recognition of his long-standing dedication and unwavering commitment to strengthening organizational capacity and sustainability in the Asian American community.

Nelson leads The Ong Family Foundation, a private foundation established in 1997 with a broad philanthropic focus, particularly on programs that serve Asian communities. The foundation supports Social Services, Education, Medicine & Health Care, and Arts & Culture, awarding over $8 million to more than 100 nonprofit organizations in the Greater New York Metropolitan area. Nelson emphasizes building grantees' organizational capacity and sustainability to maximize the foundation's impact.

Nelson previously worked with the YMCA for 37 years, beginning as a Youth Coordinator and eventually serving as President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater Bergen County. His tenure included leadership roles in youth programs, senior initiatives, capital projects, and international travel. Nelson co-founded the YMCA of the USA’s Asian Leadership Network and received the YMCA National AYP Award for Excellence twice.

He also contributed to rebuilding NYC’s Chinatown post-9/11 through the Rebuilding Chinatown Initiative and served on the National Board of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and as a trustee of the YMCA’s Fred Y. Hoshiyama Asian Leadership Scholarship Fund.

Nelson and his wife, Deborah Chan, reside in New York City and remain dedicated to strengthening Asian Pacific Islander American community organizations.
