Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the State Shipments for August 2018.

Here are a few key findings:

  • Total beer shipment volume increased by 1.2% in August – well above its year-to-date trend, which is now -0.6% through the first eight months.
  • While temperatures were slightly warmer than normal in August throughout most of the country, much of the Midwest experienced normal to below normal temperatures, resulting in beer shipment performance below the national average.
  • Overall, beer performed strongly during this year’s critical summer selling season (May-August), growing 0.2% on average.  All beer segments improved on their year-to-date trends.
  • FMBs, including hard seltzers, were the top performing segment during the summer selling season, although imports remain the top performing segment year-to-date through August.
  • Many supply issues that prevented greater performance during the first half of the year appear resolved, however, transportation remains a concern for beer and many other industries.
