As the same-sex marriage postal vote draws closer, much is being written about what each side needs to do to sway public opinion. There has been little hard evidence presented on the traits of those people likely to support or oppose marriage equality. Francisco Perales and Alice Campbell have crunched the data on trends in public attitudes on this issue over a decade, and found that while support for marriage equality has overwhelmingly grown, certain groups in Australian society remain unconvinced.
And also today, congratulations to the winners of the 2017 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes.
Several Conversation authors were among those recognised for their work. University of Adelaide’s Alan Cooper won for the Aboriginal Heritage Project, which uses DNA from hair samples to construct a map of Indigenous Australia prior to colonisation. Andrew Steer of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute took home a prize for his clinical research on scabies.
