Barnard College Construction Update - Feb. 4, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

The construction fence is nearly finished and work continues on building the scaffolding around the site and continuing work inside Lehman, which we hope to have finished by mid-to-late February.  At that point, demolition of Lehman will begin.

One last point of clarification regarding the sidewalk closure on Claremont Avenue: The east side of the sidewalk between W. 119th Street and W. 120th Street is open to people entering and leaving the Barnard campus at W. 119th. The sidewalk is then closed from W. 119th Street to W. 116th Street.

Several people have mentioned the inconvenience of only having crosswalks at W. 116th or W. 120th. As we said in an earlier update, we requested a temporary crosswalk at 119th Street and Claremont as part of our construction plan submittal, but the Department of Transportation did not approve that request. They believe that the crosswalks at 116th Street and 120th Street are sufficient, and they don’t intend to add any additional crosswalks or sidewalks in response to our construction project.

Two-Week Look Ahead – Feb. 4- 18

  • This week, we are continuing to build the scaffolding around the campus side of the site perimeter, and are beginning the same work along Claremont.  As the scaffolding is completed, you will start to see fine mesh netting hung in areas to help further contain dust. In addition, we are beginning to build the hard cover over the air-handling unit on the Barnard Annex roof to help protect the unit during construction.
  • The construction team is also working to repair the leaks in the North-South Walkway, which we know many of you use to go between Claremont and Broadway. As is the case with most sidewalk corridors built in New York City, our walkway wasn’t constructed to keep out all the elements. Still, we are working to seal the leaks to keep you as dry as possible.
